I was filling a shelf in the shop I work at and overheard a woman call her daughter over to her. The daughter's name was Evangeline, pronounced Ee-van-jel-een. I don't like it, personally.
That isn't exactly how I would pronounce it, but that's probably just a small difference in phonetic spellings.
Evangeline is actually a fairly popular/common name, and has been for awhile. I think it's really pretty, and I would use it. It's quite high on my list of baby names, but I have it filed under Middle Names.
I love the name, but the pronunciation does seem off to me too. Was it Evan-- like the boy's name Evan? I've heard it both Uh (Ah?)-VAN-juh-leen and Ee-VAN-juh-leen before.
I pronounce it E-van-gel-eene, and I love it. I'd love to use it and call her Eva. Mostly cause I like the name Eva (a-vah) but feel it's too trendy and too short, but makes a beautiful nickname. Husband's not into it though:( That lady's pronunciation of it, though...sucks. Makes an angelic name sound like a boy name...mixed with jelly, LOL.
I like Evangeline enough. It's not a favorite. I've heard it pronounced with -line at the end instead of -leen too. I grew up with a kid who had a younger sister named Evangeline--she was a baby when we were kids, but still. We called her Eve or Evie.
It's not a super-unusual name and probably originated with the poem of the same name (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangeline), by Longfellow.
Ee-van-jel-een is how I've usually heard it pronounced where I come from. I like the name and the pronunciation (and it was used once in my family), but it holds a lot of meaning in my part of the world and I'm not sure I'd like to saddle a kid with it.
The name reminds me of "Nanny McPhee". I kind of like it because of the character (and probably because of its similarity to Evelyn, at least in the nicknaming world), but it's such a long name.
I can't stand it personally. It could be because there's this really annoying song in French Canada about this woman named Evangeline and the song really annoys the heck out of me. It was almost my youngest daughter's middle name. My sisters were in charge of choosing the name and they wanted to honor our Acadian heritage (because of the song) but they instead decided to honor me (Emilie) and go with Emma. I was very relieved!
It makes me think of the fire fly in "The Princess and the Frog," wasn't that the name the fire fly gave to the moon or a star or something? Haha.Aside from that, I think it's a pretty name, lots of potential cute nicknames too!
