Amaury.

I saw this name in the opening credits for Prison Break (my newest Netflix addiction!!). I had never heard it before and thought it was a girl's name and liked it a lot. I pronounced it "AW-marie" in my mind, even though the spelling didn't really fit that pronunciation. But I looked it up and found out it is a male name.

Has anyone heard it before? What would you think of it as a girl name? And what is the correct pronunciation?

Side note: speaking of Prison Break, I've taken a liking to the name Lincoln, Linc for short. Thoughts?

Amaury/Amaurys is really common among Dominicans. Idk- but we are infamous for inventing names. Such as blending the father and mothers name to make something "unique." It gets bad, really bad. I've only heard of that name affliated with boys and its usually pronounced Ah-mao-ry.

I've heard it several times in France, where it's pronounced Ah-mow-ree or something close to it (it's rather hard for me to spell phonetically in a way that works for an English speaker). It would be weird to use it for a girl here but in English speaking countries I guess it would be okay.

P.S. Sorry if someone told you that already. It seems there's some kind of bug stopping me from reading other people's comments.

I have seen Amaury, I believe on netflix as well but not on Prison Break. Maybe How I Met Your Mother.

I have always wanted to pronounce it Ah-MORE-ee. I like the Aw-marie pronunciation better. Ah-mao-ree is OK.

I am Puerto Rican and Amaury, while not a common name, is still a well known name. We use it for our boys though, not girls, however I feel it s unisex.

I knew an Amaury in HS or college (can't remember; we weren't really friends). She was a girl, and the name was pronounced "ah-MAO-ry", with the rolled r.

I love "Lincoln"! :)

Rather common in Brazil as well, both Amauri and Amaury. Only for boys - if you named a girl Amaury here, people would ask you if you were drunk or something.

I found a page where you can listen to a French person pronouncing it: http://www.forvo.com/word/amaury/ (not that it really matters if all those who'll pronounce the child's name are non-French speakers). I would make the "au" a little longer to distinguish it from a "o" but it might be just my Belgian accent.

I couldn't do it, but I grew up hearing this name for boys, so for me it's strange. Also, it's a bit of an old-fashioned name - I don't recall meeting an Amaury who's younger than 40.

The only reason I can possibly think of is because she was trying to be "unique" and spell it like Amour.. (love). All I know is that I HATE it. lol.
