Virtue names

ThatI'm not a huge fan of virtue names, but I get why some people are. Most of the people I know with virtue names (besides the obvious ones - Faith, Hope, Grace) are Nigerians. I took my son to the pediatrician and there was a Nigerian nurse with the first name Comfort.

Comfort is totally not my style, but her name made me smile anyway. How appropriate that she would be a nurse for children.

I've met a few Comforts, all African (I don't know specifically if they were Nigerian), and it reminds me of a book I read as a kid called Comfort Herself, about a little girl called Comfort moving from Africa to Britain. Anyone called Comfort should be big and squashy!

I like the name Comfort. It has such a beautiful meaning and just sounds so warm and peaceful, like sitting in front of an open fire in the winter or watching the sunset on a warm evening. Totally a guilty pleasure name. I wouldn’t be able to use it for my children though since their surname would begin with a T. Comfort would end up merging with it, and it wouldn’t sound right.

From what I've heard, many Nigerians translate their child's name's meaning directly into English, hence the names that might seem a little strange to English speakers.

There's a comic artist I like whose name is Comfort Love (she's white). I'm guessing it's not her birth name, but I don't know.
