Circumstantial Names

A friend of mine whose daughter has been born extremely premature has been named Pravi Sazana Vetarovich. In Serbian, Pravi can mean 'real' or 'living'. Sazana means 'fighter'. Born at only 24 weeks into the pregnancy, she appears to so far be doing good despite having somewhat underdeveloped lungs and needing to be in an incubator. She's tiny but she's more or less stable and her father is determined she's going to pull through, hence he talking his wife into the name Pravi Sazana. His logic is "one day, when some idiot on the playground tries to make fun of her, she can tell them she got her name for being a survivor and their parents grabbed a trendy name out of a grab bag". (I'm pretty sure that's dad-speak for 'I love my kid and screw everybody else').

What do you think? If you don't like the sound of a name, does the story behind it or the meaning of the names make it better? Personally, even though I've never liked Pravi, I just have this weird feeling their baby girl has earned it.

I'd never heard the name Pravi before but I quite like it. I also love that is has a meaning. Maybe if I really didn't like the sound of the name, the meaning might help but I think Pravi is quite pretty anyway. I prefer Sazana mind you :p

Pravi is a pretty common name with Serbians and Serbian Americans. It is, admittedly, usually a boy's name.

Her parents are holding up pretty well all things considered, but as part of their circle of friends I'm a little lost on what to do as support other than positive thinking sometimes. But I'm hoping the positive thoughts garnered by people online will all add up and help somehow. *fingers crossed*

I really like the name...Pravi...wow...that's just something that really sticks with you. Especially when you throw in the meaning and the story of the little one. Couldn't be more fitting and really cause you to take a liking to the name.

I wasn't initially a fan of it, but under the circumstances I'm actually growing fond of it. Maybe it's a personal thing, but I'm always a fan of parents who put a lot of thought into the meaning of the name rather than just the sound.

I don't care for Pravi, probably because it just so happened 99% of the Indian girls I went to school with had names that started with Pr- and I got sick of it. Priyanka. Priya. Pravati. Priti. Pritika. Pratchi etc.

This is fascinating to me. I was completely unaware that there were so many Pr- names out there. My family is Serbian and our community is Serbian/Irish/German mixed so I think this is the only Pr- name in our litany of names.

Huh, I never noticed that about Indian names, but you're right! I went to school with a Pratiksha, a Priya and a Prianna. :o
