Okay, becuase of my new friend soleilshine, I was thinking about the name Soleil for a girl. Pronounced the French way: so-lay, so as in, like, sewing.
I know a little girl by that name, it's cute. I also live in Canada though, so most of the population knows at least a bit of french... so the name isn't really all that foreign.
Hehe, I love nosey people! ;) So ask away anytime!
Honestly, the worst is probably that nobody says it right. I live in Canada now, but I'm not from here.. I'm from the Czech Republic, so it gets said incorrectly even more there than here, which is bad. {And the Punky Brewster thing...}
The best part, when people actually figure out how to SAY my name, they love it. I've never had anybody tell me they didn't like my name {expect for maybe the comment below where a person insisted I'd be made fun of if I went to france ;) .. } That, and it's pretty unique, I suppose. I've known a person here and there with the name, but for the most part - I'm pretty alone. {Plus, all of my friends name their daughters after me ... true story}
I'm a twin, so my parents had this weird agreement, where my mom would name one baby and my dad would name the other. My dad named me, and to be honest - without much of a reason. He just always loved the name Soleil, and always said if he ever had a daughter, she'd put the sunshine in his life forever {Soleil meaning sun in english, but I think you know that also, ;) }
I think if I didn't know french, they wouldn't react to it quite the same. When I moved to Canada, my parents made it so they knew both the national languages, and insisted that my siblings and I did as well... since I know the language, people don't really say much about it. Like I said in a comment belong, when I was in France, and I shared my name with anybody - they loved it.
beautiful. If people arent familiar with the word then the pronunciation will get totally botched into the ugly 'sol-eel' But i guess most people know at least a little french in the day & age!

What's the worst part of your name being Soleil? What's the best part? Why did your parents pick it? How do francophones react to your name?
