Okay, becuase of my new friend [livejournal.com profile] soleilshine, I was thinking about the name Soleil for a girl. Pronounced the French way: so-lay, so as in, like, sewing.

WDYT?

I think it's a pretty name. I like the way it looks and the way it sounds.

I know a little girl by that name, it's cute. I also live in Canada though, so most of the population knows at least a bit of french... so the name isn't really all that foreign.

You're right. I've only met one other person with my name. =0

I asked that a few weeks ago! I love it, myself.

(I'm in Canada, everyone would know how to pronounce it.)

Nah, they don't. Everybody asks me if my name is so-leel.

Really? Ugh.

I'm gonna be nosy for a minute...because Soleil is really a hot contender for me.

What's the worst part of your name being Soleil? What's the best part? Why did your parents pick it? How do francophones react to your name?

Hehe, I love nosey people! ;)
So ask away anytime!

Honestly, the worst is probably that nobody says it right. I live in Canada now, but I'm not from here.. I'm from the Czech Republic, so it gets said incorrectly even more there than here, which is bad. {And the Punky Brewster thing...}

The best part, when people actually figure out how to SAY my name, they love it. I've never had anybody tell me they didn't like my name {expect for maybe the comment below where a person insisted I'd be made fun of if I went to france ;) .. } That, and it's pretty unique, I suppose. I've known a person here and there with the name, but for the most part - I'm pretty alone. {Plus, all of my friends name their daughters after me ... true story}

I'm a twin, so my parents had this weird agreement, where my mom would name one baby and my dad would name the other. My dad named me, and to be honest - without much of a reason. He just always loved the name Soleil, and always said if he ever had a daughter, she'd put the sunshine in his life forever {Soleil meaning sun in english, but I think you know that also, ;) }

I think if I didn't know french, they wouldn't react to it quite the same. When I moved to Canada, my parents made it so they knew both the national languages, and insisted that my siblings and I did as well... since I know the language, people don't really say much about it. Like I said in a comment belong, when I was in France, and I shared my name with anybody - they loved it.

Oh hey, come on now, I didn't say I didn't like it! I just said it could be weird! Just being honest. :(

I can't help but think of Punky Brewster (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0004941/), with that name!

Personally I'm not a fan, but I guess it's unique, still.

beautiful. If people arent familiar with the word then the pronunciation will get totally botched into the ugly 'sol-eel' But i guess most people know at least a little french in the day & age!

I have a French name and grew up in Kansas. My name was murdered everywhere. If you use Soleil, be prepared for her to be called "So-lyle" and such.

I think it's better as a middle name.

I knew a Soleil in school. Rather, knew of - her brother Ryland was in my class. Their last name was Poole.

I think she'd be laughed at if she ever went to France, but there could be worse names.

I've been to France, and my name was continually complimented, =)

Eh, different opinions. My family's French, and we all agree it's kind of weird in a French context.

I'm 100% Czech, born & raised, so the french thing never came in to play. =)
