[identity profile] medamina.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
Hello, lovely people! This is my first post in this community - I've always been hugely interested in names even as a little girl, so I have had many hours of awesome reading through posts and I thank you for that!

So, I'm a huge fan of Tamora Pierce, and there are quite a few names I like from her multiple series. I'm canvassing opinions about them: which do you like, which do you dislike, which can be used or not (this is particularly interesting to me in terms of your opinions). Some are more "normal" than others. So, without further ado:

Girls
Alanna
Alianne
Delia
Dovasary (Dove)
Eleni
Keladry (Kel)
Imajane
Josiane
Lalasa
Loesa
Onua
Petranne
Sandrilene
Saraiyu (Sarai)
Sarralyn
Thayet
Trisana
Veralidaine (Daine)
Winnamine

Boys
Domitan
Mequen
Myles
Nealan

Apologies if a post like this has been made before!

I've been a fan of her books for years, and I've always quite liked Thayet.

The only ones I can really see being used are Alanna, Delia, Eleni, and Myles. Maybe to Josiane, Sarralyn, and Nealan, but I think Josiane would look better as Josie Anne, and Sarralyn would be better as Saralyn or Sara Lynn. I could see Alianne, which I'm assuming is pronounced the same as Ally-Anne, with a different spelling. Alianne is too reminiscent of "alien" to me.

From the list, the only one I especially like is Eleni. I like Alanna and Myles, but prefer the spellings Alana and Miles. Imajane is pretty, too. I'm reading it as imm-uh-JANE, though. If it's supposed to be I-muh-jane, I'm not such a fan.

Veralidaine is my least favorite here. Too long and clunky for my taste.

I'm curious about Tamora, too, actually, never having heard it before. Is it pronounced more like "tuh-MORE-uh" than "TAM-uh-ruh" (as some would pronounce Tamara)? If so, I kind of like it.

Very interesting names. There was an Eleni at my college...I think she was Greek.

My favorite Tamora name has always been Briar. And he's one of my favorite characters :) Also Nawat (would be totally weird in real life, but I loved it in the books!) and Neal's father, Baird.

Delia can be used as a nickname for Cordelia, which I like.
Imajane reminds me strongly of Imogen and Imogene.
Josiane is one I am really quite taken with and I don't usually care for made up names!
Sandrilene I thought was really pretty back when I read a couple of the books she is in. Something about it bothers me slightly now though. I notice you didn't mention her nn Sandry.
Saraiyu sounds kind of Asian to me, what with the "yu" on the end. I believe Sarai is an actually name. I'm pretty sure it's the original name of the woman who became known as Sara(h) in the Bible.
Sarralyn amuses me because I know a Sarah Lynn.
Trisana is the other name on the list that I'm familiar with from reading. I think it's pretty.
Veralidaine (Daine) strikes me as sounding like a medieval masculine name for some reason. The nickname Daine looks like someone typoed Diane. If it's pronounced like "Dane," then it sounds very masculine as well.
Winnamine makes me think of Guinevere for some reason.

I don't really have any comments on the boys' names, except that Myles/Miles is one you see in real life too.

The ones I could see being usable in real life are: Alanna, Delia, Eleni, Josiane, Trisana, and Myles.

My Christian upbringing is showing. When I talked about Sarai in the Bible, I was referring to a story in the Old Testament so, of course, the story is found in the Torah as well.

Girls
Alanna - there were several of these in my grade in high school, I like it.
Alianne- sounds like mispronouncing alien
Delia- i like this but i can't dissociate it from the junior's clothing company
Dovasary (Dove) - I like this. I wonder where the emphasis is placed, though.
Eleni - I knew one, it's alright.
Keladry (Kel) - I like this too.
Imajane - someone was trying to get kre8ive with imogen?
Josiane- i don't like it.
Lalasa- lasa apso is a kind of dog, i think.
Loesa- sounds like a birth control
Onua- yikes.
Petranne - sounds kind of harsh
Sandrilene -i would like this if it didn't sounds so much like Sandra Lee (the chef on tv)
Saraiyu (Sarai) - I like Sarai
Sarralyn - I like it, although it looks like someone tried to be special with Sara Lynn
Thayet- not my style.
Trisana - OK
Veralidaine (Daine)- I like this one, it's strong. NN could be Vera.
Winnamine- I really like this.

Boys
Domitan- just odd.
Mequen- Me-kwen sounds cute but I don't think it would suit a mature man
Myles- like
Nealan- like!

It seems like this Tamora uses a lot of regular names and either adds sounds at the end or substitutes ending sounds.

I cannot tell you how many of her character names I have mispronounced in the twelve years I've been reading her books. I will always read "Thayet" as THAY-et, and Thom as THom, and many others wrong. I do adore her books, though, and I like her names in them, though I don't think too many of them translate to the real world.

Also, it's Deliah, not Delia, iirc. The SOTL series uses Deliah and then in...Squire's Own? during the Progress it's spelled Delia, but I think TP actually admits that it's a mistake when someone calls her out on it.

I love Tamora Pierce novels but have never considered using one of her names.
