Family tree names.
Jun. 8th, 2012 03:37 pmRecently, I've been thinking about my maternal great-grandmothers' names and the sibsets they ended up in. They're all very turn-of-the-century, but interesting.
Great-Grandmother 1 (Grandma's mother): Helen
Older siblings: Eleanor, Charles, Louis
I find myself wondering how Helen and Eleanor ended up in the same sibset since Eleanor is the Latin offshoot of Helen.
Great-Grandmother 2 (Grandpa's mother): Susie (not Susan, just Susie)
Siblings: Mamie, Frances, Venita, Celestine, Loretto (f), Jarleth (m)
These are all over the place and I love it. They sound like characters in a novel to me.
WDYT?

Date: 2012-06-08 09:54 pm (UTC)Maternal Great-Grandparents, round 1: Viola Belle and George Ervin (he used his middle name, though):
Great-Granddad was an only child afaik and Great-Grandma had one brother, William.
Their kids:
Wilmot Rodger, James Eldridge (uses his middle name), Delbert Dalton (used his mn), Emma Rebecca (named for her grandmothers, called Beckie), Velma Madeline, Annie May (uses her mn), and Mattie Laurena (not sure where this one came from: she was apparently named by a friend, after his mother).
Maternal Great-Grandparents, round 2: Florence Avora and Claude Franklyn:
Great-Grandma came from a family of 12 or 13 and some of her siblings were named Rockwell ("Rock"), Royal ("Roy"), and Vivienne. Great-Granddad, IIRC, had a sister called Winnie who died from tuberculosis quite young.
Their sons were Kendall Claude and Wayne Franklyn (I see what you did there, Great-Grandparents).

Date: 2012-06-10 05:31 am (UTC)I love Viola Belle. It sounds very old Hollywood movie star to me.
How lucky are you to have so many unique names to choose from!

Date: 2012-06-08 11:25 pm (UTC)I also like Celestine.
I find Jarleth interesting because I've never seen it before but the quick L-to-TH might be too much for my lazy tongue in every day use.

Date: 2012-06-09 01:37 am (UTC)I like Celestine a lot, too, but it also makes me giggle because there have been several Popes named Celestine.
I've never seen Jarleth anywhere else, either. It's bizarre, but I don't think I have pronunciation problems with it (it looks like a combination of Jarvis and Gareth to me).

3) When I saw Jarleth I though it was Jareth, and then it was nothing but David Bowie's Goblin King performance in "Labyrinth". And I love that.

Date: 2012-06-09 06:37 am (UTC)Totally agree about G-G2, those names are epically awesome! In particular, I like Celestine (I have issues with Celeste but Celestine is really nice) and Venita. I feel a bit bad for Frances though, her name is the plainest if it's not put in context with the others.
