Love/hate relationship
Jun. 8th, 2012 01:15 pmI was reading some comments in previous posts and thought about names that I really liked until someone came along and gave a really negative connotation to it.
For me, I think Kendall is a really pretty name, but now I cringe at the mention of it because that's my husband's crazy ex-girlfriend.
What names did/do you like that have been totally ruined for you?

Date: 2012-06-08 09:47 pm (UTC)Owen - the choice I had for my son, but my husband had bad experiences with someone named Owen, so he nixed it pretty quickly.

Date: 2012-06-08 10:28 pm (UTC)Laurel was the name of one of my dolls growing up (an American girl knock-off brand, but she was awesome!) and it's been one of my favorite names ever since

Date: 2012-06-09 12:10 am (UTC)I had a horrible, abusive stepdad who absolutely ruined the name Rick for me, and as my husband was suggesting baby names this last round, I realized that I'm turned off by most 'R' names now entirely. The only one I could think of that I actually like is Raya, and I would use that more for a character in my writing than I would ever use for a kid, most likely (especially considering we named this baby "Maya", so there goes that one).

Date: 2012-06-09 03:59 am (UTC)That really sucks :( my dad's name was Rick also, but that's why I love the name.

Date: 2012-06-11 10:29 pm (UTC)I thought of another one. My husband really fought for the name Elias if we'd had a boy. I used to like the name, but we had a kid named Elias stay with us like ten years ago. He was a bit of a weird kid. After living with him for a while, I just can't name my kid Elias now.

Date: 2012-06-13 12:48 am (UTC)Aw, that's a shame :( Elias is such a great name!

Date: 2012-06-09 01:27 am (UTC)Also Kylie. Not because of anything other than it being a horrible, 1970s Australian name. And every Kylie (Or Kylee or Kylea or Kyleigh) is a Kylie Ann or Anne. It astounds me that people in countries other than Australia are giving their kids the name Kylie now, when it's seen as a bogan name here!

Date: 2012-06-09 04:33 am (UTC)This is the Kylie who really made it a 'bogan' name in Australia -- a character from a comedy in the 80s:

Where I'm from a female bogan was a Shazza. A male bogan was a Dave.

And this is a take off of the Meredith Brooks song Bitch, called Bloke. Both show you classic boganism at work!

Date: 2012-06-12 01:09 pm (UTC)Genevieve is the name of a really cool girl I knew as a kid, whose red hair I DESPERATELY wanted.
Evelyn was the name of my history/politics teacher, who was ... okay, but not 'cool'. I've always associated Evelyn with 'old', somehow.

Date: 2012-06-09 07:04 am (UTC)Andrew. I've dated two Andrews and neither has been a particular inspiration to me.
And ditto on Lauren, I had a "friend" called Lauren who did her absolute best to ruin my life after three years of friendship. Again, a name I like but I just can't put it on my list even as a middle name.

Date: 2012-06-09 03:24 pm (UTC)At least Lauren isn't a rare name, takes the sting away a bit that it's got bad associations , maybe?
