[identity profile] earn-my-wings.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames

I was reading some comments in previous posts and thought about names that I really liked until someone came along and gave a really negative connotation to it.

For me, I think Kendall is a really pretty name, but now I cringe at the mention of it because that's my husband's crazy ex-girlfriend.

What names did/do you like that have been totally ruined for you?

Malia. I went to school with a girl named Maleah and she was a royal bitch. Otherwise it would be at the top of my list.

I plan on naming my first daughter Malia. Even though I have a niece named Kaleah. D:

I can't use Jason. I've forgiven the Jason who was one of the most ignorant bullies I've ever encountered, but I'm not bestowing that name on anything, other than maybe a villain in any future stories.

Also, the only Kendall I've ever known personally was male (and one of my first crushes in elementary school), so I couldn't use that on a girl.

Laurel - my husband's ex's name is Laurie, and although I personally could still use it, he probably would not want to.

Owen - the choice I had for my son, but my husband had bad experiences with someone named Owen, so he nixed it pretty quickly.

Oh no! Hope I didn't give offense! If I did, I'm sorry.

I had a horrible, abusive stepdad who absolutely ruined the name Rick for me, and as my husband was suggesting baby names this last round, I realized that I'm turned off by most 'R' names now entirely. The only one I could think of that I actually like is Raya, and I would use that more for a character in my writing than I would ever use for a kid, most likely (especially considering we named this baby "Maya", so there goes that one).

Oh, man! I just keep stepping on the names you love. Sorry! lol

I thought of another one. My husband really fought for the name Elias if we'd had a boy. I used to like the name, but we had a kid named Elias stay with us like ten years ago. He was a bit of a weird kid. After living with him for a while, I just can't name my kid Elias now.

Emily. It's the name of a vile girl I used to work with. I work with a really nice Emily now, but the other Emily's yuckiness wins out.

Also Kylie. Not because of anything other than it being a horrible, 1970s Australian name. And every Kylie (Or Kylee or Kylea or Kyleigh) is a Kylie Ann or Anne. It astounds me that people in countries other than Australia are giving their kids the name Kylie now, when it's seen as a bogan name here!

In my year at school we had two Kylies, a Kylea and a Kylee.

This is the Kylie who really made it a 'bogan' name in Australia -- a character from a comedy in the 80s:

To elaborate on Bogan (in NSW, they seem to call them Bevans as well)

http://www.bogan.com.au/definition/index.php

Where I'm from a female bogan was a Shazza. A male bogan was a Dave.

If you liked those videos, you'll love these -- this is Eric Bana, long before he was a movie star, playing a character called Poida (bogan pronunciation of Peter)

And this is a take off of the Meredith Brooks song Bitch, called Bloke. Both show you classic boganism at work!

Bana as the Americans have never seen him before, I'm sure! This is from the show that basically started his career.

Oh, and Kendall -- apart from sounding like a boy's name to me -- also reminds me of Ken Doll. As in Barbie's buddy.

Evelyn with a nickname d Evie or Eve has always been my first choice for a girl.. Until my husband told me it was the name of his drug addict aunt. ;(

From: [identity profile] behindgrey-eyes.livejournal.com
Oh god, Evelyn is one of my top girls names too, that sucks :( Luckily the only Evelyn I know is one of my mum's friends and she's lovely.

You could go Genevieve with Eve as a nickname.

I'm not particularly find of Genevieve, mostly because of negative associations with a lazy ex co-worker. Plus, it just doesn't sound as pretty as Evelyn! Haha.

From: [identity profile] alyssa22.livejournal.com
I'm kind of the opposite.

Genevieve is the name of a really cool girl I knew as a kid, whose red hair I DESPERATELY wanted.

Evelyn was the name of my history/politics teacher, who was ... okay, but not 'cool'. I've always associated Evelyn with 'old', somehow.

I absolutely love the name Lauren, but my aunt's name is Lauren and I wouldn't want her to ever think I'd name a child after her. She's a drug addict and made half of my life a living hell. Also, my husband's ex is named Laura which is pretty close to Lauren (and Lorelei, which I love as well). Let's just say she has rubbed me the wrong way since I met her 15 years ago. Speaking of Laura - she ended up marrying someone named Hannibal. It may seem creepy thanks to The Silence of the Lambs, but I LOVE that name too.

Bridget. I recently met a very nice Bridget and that redeemed the name a bit for me but every single one of the "popular" girls at all my schools was called Bridget, it's a bit unfortunate because I like the name in itself.

Andrew. I've dated two Andrews and neither has been a particular inspiration to me.

And ditto on Lauren, I had a "friend" called Lauren who did her absolute best to ruin my life after three years of friendship. Again, a name I like but I just can't put it on my list even as a middle name.

I really liked the name Lucia, but my awful boss is called that.

Ahhhhhh I feel your pain! I like the name Genevieve. Gen for short. BUT I too cannot use it due to ex-girlfriend! Haha, isnt it funny how much we associate names with people and thats what puts us off? :)

P.S I also liked Jessica. Jess for short. But when I met my husband, then boyfriend, it was his dogs name.
