Apparently someone on BBC is going to name her little boy "Lotus".

I personally wouldn't even like that name for a girl, but on a boy that just seems cruel. What do you think?

I quite like flower names for girls, but not for boys, and of course, a lot of flower names just aren't name material at all, this being one of them.

As if my user name didn't give it away, I really like the name. I think it works better for a girl though than it does for a boy, though for a boy concerning flower names it's not the worst choice ever. But yeah, not a fan.

If its a euphemism for vagina, you ought not make it your sons name.

I do like it, and it is on my list, but for a girl.

I could see it as middle name, for a girl.

I honestly used to have a cat (female) named Lotus. I don't like the name for a human.

Question is, is she using the name after the flower, or the car?

Someone above mentioned the car...that was my first thought too, that maybe the couple likes fast cars. And in that case, yeah, I could see how it might be a masculine name.

Actually, if you take away all object connotations and just look at the name itself, it really is a masculine name, with the Latin "-us" ending.

But let's be honest here, most people are going to think of the flower. And society says that makes it feminine.

I see nothing wrong with the name... naming your son after a flower doesn't seem wrong either. Narcissus was a guy (according to mythology)
