A girl i went to school with is pregnant and naming her daughter Paizley Carlisle Tharp.  the Z is just dumb to me and Carlisle is her baby daddy's last name so she is using it for a middle name?  I hate everything about this.

Also while I am posting I might as well ask.... Allora or Alora?  is the 2nd L unnecessary?  Middle name Elaine (both my maternal and paternal grandmothers' and my own middle name).   I really love this name and you might remember my post a few months back about not wanting anything too trendy.  I was hesitant to even post this because i don't want anyone to steal it, stupid i know!  I think Allora looks prettier written out and in Italian it means something like "at that time" or in Aboriginal means "swamp land" yuck.  Alora in African means "my dream" which is really fitting because we were really sure this was a boy except every single dream I've had this pregnancy was about a little girl.  Also Elora is out, i don't want initials EEF and I don't like the "eh-lora" i like "ah-lora".  Oh and one last thing I REALLY don't want people to call her Laura, I am going to have to be the pushy mom that corrects everyone that does it I guess.  

You can probably tell my tastes are very different from the girl i went to school with!

Paizley/Paisley is awful. I actually kind of like Carlisle (the sound of it), in a guilty pleasure way. I could see it on a boy.

Al(l)ora Elaine is really difficult to say. The Al-/El- beginnings sound basically the same to me (slight difference, but not much if you say it quickly). Then the first name ends in an uh sound, and the middle begins with an eh sound, so they almost blend together. I keep saying Aloralaine. I suppose Alora looks better. The double L looks unnecessary.

Well slow down! My name is Cara Elaine so it also ends in an "uh" sound aldo and never once has this crossed my mind. I do think the al/el is pretty similar but not a deal breaker for us.

It's really not unusual to use a family member's last name as a middle name. For instance, on my dad's side, I have a cousin named Phillip Kohl [last name]---Kohl is our grandmother's maiden name; on my mom's side, there's Luke Brady [last name] (our great-grandmother's maiden name) and Matthew Schlafly [last name] (his mother's maiden name). While I don't like Paisley, using Carlisle as the middle name may be a way of honoring the father if the girl won't have his last name legally.

Kohl and Brady are both masculine and on boy names so those work for me. Schlafly just makes me think of the beer. I think its more of a low blow than a way to honor the father, like his name isn't good enough to be the last name but I guess we can fit it in somewhere.

Perhaps they've split but she wants the girl to know who her father is? Or perhaps they're not marrying, but she wants to include the name somehow?

I like it as Elora. To me, Alora is just Elora spelled "weird." (And LJ's spell check feature agrees.) I don't think initials matter unless they spell something bad. But if I had to pick between Alora and Allora I'd definitely go with Alora.

I am 99% sure that this name was discussed in this comm another time very recently.

I agree w/ the first replier that Alora Elaine doesn't flow so well. They also sound very similar

IMO: Elora is pronounced Uh-lora. Alora pronounced the same way.

I agree with the other posters that Al(l)ora Elaine doesn't flow well at all. Whenever I test names, I practice yelling them like they're in trouble, lol. With "Alora Elaine!" I fell like I have to really enunciate so it doesn't come out as "Aloralaine!" (As someone else mentioned in a previous comment). The only way it works for me is if I pronounce Elaine "EE-laine."

I definitely prefer Elora over starting with the A. But of those two, I actually like Allora better. I tend to prefer double-L's in girls' names though.

All that said, if you love this name go for it! All this criticism aside, it's really not that bad-- and certainly nowhere near as bad as Paizley!

i do love it! Its definitely going to be her name :) i totally get what everyone is saying but it doesn't sound bad to me, when I got in trouble and my mom yelled at me and called my by my middle name it had the same effect Cara Elaine so "Caralaine!" to me the running together is melodic or at least flows. Even my paternal grandmother is Barbara Elaine which would do the same thing again.... I guess I'm just used to that sound or combination of the ending in "ah" beginning in "eh" because it really doesn't bother me one bit!

I was going to say I preferred Allora to Alora, but I love the name Elora and I think because of that I prefer Alora. I have to agree with everyone that has said Al(l)ora Elaine is a bit of a mouthful, but it's pretty and has a really great flow (which is something I think is important), and if you really love it, go for it. It's not often a first and middle name are used together. And it's a hundred times better than Paizley! (Although I've got to admit Paisley is kind of cute.)
