I'm curious what you guys think of the name Virginia. I love it, but do you think it's usable?

I happen to be from Virginia, so I doubt I'd ever use it myself, but I do happen to love the name.

It was my gran's name, so it's got a middle name slot for me. She went by Ginger.

Never heard of Ginger as a nickname for Virginia. My friend went by Gin, Virg, Ginny, and sometimes Verger. Which reminds me, people also teased her with Virginal. Too many heinous nicknames, IMO, for a first name.

Never been a fan, but an old friend had the name. People called her Vagina. : ( She went by Gin invariably. . .

I like it but it's more of a middle name IMO because of the nicknames that go with it.

Overall, I don't like it.

I do like that it's pretty classic and if it weren't similar to any other words, I would like the sound.

But I hate that it has "virgin" in it and sounds like "vagina". It would be okay on a super sexy lady, but on someone who looks like they might be a virgin not by choice, it would make things worse.

I don't like the name Chastity either. Or Delores, thanks to Seinfeld....

I get the Virgin reference, but I never think of it when I hear someone called that. And I've never thought it sounds like "vagina." Am I the only one who thinks of the state first? O.o

Virginia was my late great grandma's name. I'd consider using it if I liked it enough, which I don't. Even missing my grandma as much as I do isn't going to get me to use it.

I'd be more likely to use her middle name which was Elizabeth.

I worked with a lady named Virginia , who went by Ginny ALL THE TIME. God help you if you called her Virginia. The only reason any of us knew is that her boyfriend leaked the info to torment her. She was a really great lady, so when I think of the name (both names) I associate it with that bubbly, funny, kind woman.

I went to high school (and reconnected with on FB) a Virginia. As far as I know, she wasn't teased about her name, but she was so smart and confident that I don't think anyone messed with her. We're both in our 30s now.

The author of one of the cooking blogs I follow has a daughter named Virginia, around 5 years old. I'll admit I raised an eyebrow upon first seeing the name, but probably because it seemed too old fashioned for a kid. Still, I think it could work.

A former boss of mine was named Virginia, she went by Gini (pronounced like Jeannie).

I don't care for it much but it's not terrible. I do love Georgia, though, among the state names.

I think it's a lovely name and absolutely usable, but I'd be refrained by the connections to purity, virginity, innocence, etc., because they might be a "burden" for the wearer of the name ;)

I'm not sure because I have a nearly-92-year-old neighbor-friend named Virginia, so it sounds a bit dated to me.

I don't like it, personally. I don't hate it either. I might warm up to the name if it was on the right person....but the one Virginia I've known was a total snob so I'm sure that's part of the reason I don't like it in the first place.

Some days, like if I've been watching 10th Kingdom, I think it sounds pretty. Other days, I really don't like it at all. Like today. :\ I think it is usable, though it does kind of lend itself to teasing.

I don't like it. it's fine to use, but it's a very dated, old-laday name to me, and I don't enjoy the whole virgin reference. I agree with an above commenter about Chastity too.

I don't hate it. I could see it making a comeback...another nickname I've seen for it (though it's very old-fashioned) is Virgie/Vergie.

I don't think I've known anyone named Virginia who has been my age. I must admit I'd probably insist on calling them Virn (Vern) just because it amuses me, but I can see Gin, Ginny, V, Nia, Gia all working as nns. It might be the history geek in me, but I love Virginia with the middle name Dare.

Yes! usable! It has always been on my favorite names list. It runs in my family and sounds very classic. When I picture the name, I can see a very cute little girl with that name. I can also see an elegant grown woman with that name.
