[identity profile] ashadelic.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I was having a conversation today with a 20 year old girl I work with who is pregnant. We were discussing names and what she planned to name her baby. She already has a 14 month old son named Connor William, which I think sounds lovely! The names she has picked out are: Declan for a boy, and Kennedy for a girl. I really really liked Declan until she told me how she plans to spell it... Deklyn. *exasperated eyeroll* She said, "I just really really love k's and y's! I think they're soooo cool." I was thinking, "Yea.. you and half the rest of the population who's having children after the year 2000." I told her I really like Declan, but really didnt like that spelling. I didn't even want to bother with Kennedy.

Not a huge fan of Declan no matter how you spell it (but the "KY" spelling is hideous). I do like Kennedy, though.

That's unfortunate and seriously ugly. It's also one of those boy names that look like they've been made girly on purpose. (Because dumb spellings are so feminine...)

Accent is on the first syllable. DECK-lan.

It sounds like she likes Celtic names (Connor, Declan, Kennedy). If you really want to save her baby from "Deklyn" *shudder* maybe you could give her a Celtic themed baby name book as a gift and hopefully the correct spellings will inspire her or she'll find another name harder to mutilate.

What is with K's and Y's?? Deklyn is horrifiying. (Not that I am a fan of Declan - but come on, give the kid some dignity)

I think think of just a few names that I don't mind a C or a K being used interchangably. Catherine/Katherine, Curtis/Kurtis...hmm that is all I can think of. Declan is not one of these.

ha. Declan is pretty much the only name that my hubby & I agree on, so if the baby's a boy that's what he'll be.

somehow, when he goes to school I don't think it will be a case of "oh, another Declan in your class?"
"oh, no Mommy, HIS name is DIFFERENT it's DeKLYN."

ugh. lol

well i'm going against the grain on this one, but i dont see anything wrong with it. i personally dont like the name to begin with. however, everyone is always concerned on whether a name will be popular or not, with a slight orignal spelling, it isn't as common. it gives the child the name, and it is original to him/her(granted outlandish spellings that have letters just thrown in there anywhere for no particular reason, are just horrible). sometimes i've noticed though, that when people have chosen a certain name..when they use a creative spelling for it, it actually makes the name easier to read or sound out.now of course this also depends on where the name would be considered 'normal' and such things.

i don't know, im biais..my name is Jessika and my sons name is Issak.

With an "original" spelling, the NAME is still common, the SPELLING just isn't. Yell out Deklyn, it's still the same as Declan.

that would be my point..as to why everyone always gets in a hizzy when they see an original spelling. the NAME is still the same, the SPELLING isn't. however to the child/parent it would be an original twist on a popular(or not even popular) name that goes just for that child reguardless of how the name is 'yelled out.'

i still say that with an original twist on the name..LOOKING at a name that is spelt 'not so traditionally' gives the child an original name.
