Naming children after songs: yes/no, and why? Do you know any people named after songs?

I think yes...I would love to be named after a song that I knew my parents loved, it seems like a really special meaning. And I would definitely do it for any future children I had, if both me and my signifigant other loved the song.

I don't think I know anyone named after a song, but if my little brother Andrew had been a girl he would have been Annabelle after "Anna Begins" by the Counting Crows.

I think I've mentioned this before...

The boy & I are planning on using "Iris" as a middle name... it was 'our song' when we started dating... :)!

I got Angie after the song by the Rolling Stones. Otherwise I would have been Theresa. Thank goodness Mum liked rock.

Awww, Angie's one of my all time favourite songs and one of the reasons I would name a kid after a song.

I think it's a really nice idea. My mum's name is Sara and though she was born before Bob Dylan released his song of the same name, she's always felt a nice connection to it. Especially if the song is a good one with a positive message, I think it would be a lovely thing to do.

its ok. but i didnt do it on purpose. leila was picked before i remembered that there is a popular song with that name in it.

i think it depends on the name. i dont care if its named after a song, just if the name is godawful i wouldnt want it used anyway.

I am planning (well... if my dear fiance agrees) to name my future daughter Rhiannon (no I'm not pregnant... I had a miscarriage in July) or Sara(h) after Stevie Nicks songs...

I am really sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I know that it is a very difficult thing to go though and I hope you are getting by.

I like the idea of naming a kid after a song. It's nice to have special meaning behind a name. I thought of one of my friend's whose mom really wanted to name her Roxanne because of the song, good thing she decided not to.

I knew a Roxanne that fit that... apparently her parents had no idea about the song. blech...

haha, today I was discussing the name Lola with my friend and she was like "no that song is about a transvestite!" and I argued that Lola was a showgirl.....we were apparently talking about 2 different songs about girls named Lola, and she disliked the name-from-song idea.

my friend Rachael named her daughter Magdalena after a song by a Toronto indie group called Lowest of the Low. I thought about doing that too, as they are my favorite band, but the other names left are Carolyn, Jasmine, Kate, and Jean. I love Jasmine but I dont think my boyfriend would go for it. in the song about Carolyn he mentions Carolina (care oh leen uh), but as my name is Carlie, those are too close

so I love the name-from-song idea esp if the song is meaningful to the parents!

I think its a great idea. I think its neat when names have special meanings behind them, and some songs are very important to people.

My real name is Angelia but my parents had the song "Angie" by the Rolling Stones in mind when they named me.

After being married to a Jeremiah, I'd have to be in the minority, and say it's a bad idea. If I had a dollar for everyon who started singing "Jeremiah was a bullfrog.." after they first met him, I'd have lots of money. It's annoying, and not clever on their part in the slightest. Granted, he wasn't named after the song.. but still.. bad bad juju.

Until my parents were able to take me home from the hospital, they just called me baby (unfortunately, but maybe fortunately too. I'm kind of glad my mother hadn't seen Dirty Dancing at that point!!) On the ten minute drive home from the hospital, the radio played Waylon Jennings current number one song, "Amanda."

I can't really decide whether the song itself is depressing or not, but it definetly got me stuck on classic country.

That being said, it seems to be much much easier to name a female as opposed to a male with songs.

i knew a girl in high school named aja, after the steely dan album.
its pronounced basically like asia.

i guess its cool but its pretty obvious that its a direct steely dan reference. so...

one of my favorite girl names, madeline, stems from 2 different songs. but it's not an unusual name at all, and the songs aren't well known, so i don't think most people will make the connection.

From: [identity profile] solyma.livejournal.com
haha, yeah, that's one of the songs. the other is "madeline's song" by rich mullins.

Yes and no...if it has a good meaning its okay.

I know quite a few people named after songs.

I had planned on naming a girl Emily after the Michael W. Smith song but that is out now that 1. It is incredibly popular and 2. my best friend in middle school and I both had that same plan and she followed through with it a year and a half ago.

My name is Rhonda, Help me Rhonda! I hate that there is a song with my name. It doesn't help at all when I use to work in retail. I don't think I would do it just b/c I hate it so much for myself.

I'm named after a Grateful Dead song, Rosalee McFall.

I hate the song. My name is ok, though really old-fashioned.

We were going to name our daughter Lily, after the song "Lily (my one and only" by the Smashing Pumpkins as it is our song. But we hate how popular it is, so it'll make a great middle name instead.

I also (obviously) like the idea. But some songs may have negative meanings, or awfuls names in great songs! For example I love the name Asha but my bloke hates it because it reminds him of a song (cant remember what or by who though) that is about screwing a girl called Asha.

My friend Stephanie's middle name is Amanda after some song her parents loved.

I don't know anyone named after songs, but I might consider doing it when I'm older. I fell in love with the name Emanuela after hearing the song. Except pronounced the same way as in the song.

I absolutely adore Anabelle, and "Anna Begins"- However, my friend Anna died thanks to a joy rider, the song makes me cry everytime i listen to it. I'd love to use Anabelle in her memory but I dont know if it would be too painful. I wont be having kids for a while though, so maybe when I do I will be able to :-)

I love that song! (And I'm going to see the Counting Crows in a couple of weeks.)

I know someone who named their daughter Rhiannon after the song.
