On the ever-hilarious Cracked, they had a photoplasty contest (wherein readers photoshop images to meet a theme) with the title Classes We Wish We Could Force People To Take. On the list: Naming Conventions in Modern Society 101. Written on a chalkboard is: "Stupid is to normal as Jaeden is to Jason." And according to the creator of this image:

Acceptable Girl Names:
- Allison
- Brooke
- Amy
- Heather

Unacceptable Girl Names:
- Addison
- Brooklyn
- Avery
- Harper

Acceptable Boy Names:
- Kyle
- Brandon
- Scott
- Joe

Unacceptable Boy Names:
- Kyler
- Braeden
- Skyler
- Landon

I personally think that the "acceptable" names are a bit boring and out of date, the girl names especially. And I really like Avery, for boys and girls. WDYT?

I also like Avery.. though I cannot decide if I like it better for boys or girls.

I like Landon too.

Hate Brandon, but that's more a personal issue.

KYLE IS A NAME FOR 5-YEAR-OLDS. IT DOES NOT WORK ON ADULTS.

I might be the only person who feels this way, but I have never met a responsible, normal adult who Kyle actually worked on.

I'm pretty sure everyone with the name Kyle is a little bit immature with an undiagnosed case of ADHD.

I'd have to say I agree with most of these. While the "acceptable" names are more boring, they aren't trendy, and I really dislike trendy.

Avery & Addison I like for boy names--although they are definitely morphing into female only names.

Landon is ok, I guess. Otherwise, the rest of the "unacceptable" group is junk, IMO.

And for the "acceptable" names... the only thing to note is that I like Alison vs. Allison.

Yeah, the surge with Addison for girls confuses me, too, because I knew a male Addison when I was in elementary school, and that was the only Addison I'd ever heard of until I got to college, I think.

Hmm.

Oddly enough, the only one of these names I like is Harper.

So I guess I disagree with the image-maker?

The acceptable ones aren't necessarily "out of date"---they're just lower in the Top 1000 than they used to be and they hit their peak 15 or so years ago. There are still plenty of little girls named Allison (No. 38 in 2010), Brooke (No. 72), Amy (No. 135), and Heather (No. 685---this is the only one that's fallen considerably).

I like:

Brooke
Amy
Heather
Avery
Harper

Kyle
Brandon
Scott
Landon Sorry for the rhyming.

I think it's pretty normal for names that seem "unacceptable" to become acceptable over time. For example, Alison actually started out life as a boys name and only became popular for girls because it was trendy in the 1950s. Similarly, Avery and Addison were boys names that are slowly becoming almost exclusively for girls. Fifty years from now, they'll be considered "acceptable" and some other names will be the unacceptable ones. All in all, I think the "unacceptable" names listed here are pretty tame. The truly unacceptable names are the ones where the spelling is so mangled as to render it unpronounceable, or being named after fruit, or any of those other horrible themes.

I agree with some of these and disagree with others. I HATE the name Heather and I love Landon. Oh well.

I guarantee you that if the baby_names community had been around a few decades ago, the majority of those 'acceptable' names would have been classified as ridiculous/trendy. ;)

Honestly, the only names/spellings I roll my eyes at are Kyler (it seems incomplete/like a nickname/someone's finger slipped while typing "Kyle") and Braeden (I dislike the ae combo). Skyler is more of a girl's name to me, but I can brush it off with all the unisex names.

I think acceptable names vs unacceptable names is a matter of personal taste. There's nothing wrong with any of these names. Some of them are not my taste but there's nothing wrong with any of them. I actually like the large majority of these names depending on where and how they're used. I wish there would be names like Sparkuls or Geezuz on there because those are actually unacceptable.

This is spot on for me. I like the acceptable names and hate all the unacceptable names. I really dislike Avery and I detest Harper
