A lady I know has just given birth to a little boy...Sandy (not sure of the middle name). He has an older sister, aged 4, called Shayne (again, not sure of the middle name. I like both names but I forsee a lot of confusion down the track.

That just seems like she intentionally gave each child a name opposite to their gender....like a social statement. Which will be unfair to the kids. I highly doubt they'll go by their given names once they hit junior high.

Those names don't even seem gender NEUTRAL even. Am I alone?

Eh, Sandy seems neutral-leaning-male to me, and I think Shayne reads pretty much unisex.

I've encountered boy Sandys, in literature (one of the brothers in a Wrinkle in Time is named Sandy) and sports (Sandy Koufax) so that doesn't seem odd to me.
Shayne seems unisex as well.

I don't love Sandy for a boy, but wow, Shayne is really nice for a girl :D However, yes I do agree that people will probably mix them up because their names are slightly gender opposites.

Sandy is fairly gender neutral, though I always see it as somewhat female. I like Shane (no "y"), but for a boy. Yeah, that could definitely cause confusion.

It would cause a little confusion for me at first. Still, I've known of another female Shane, and Sandy was originally a masculine name, I believe.

I grew up with a boy called Sandy, and to me Shayne is unisex, so I think this works nicely.

I think Sandy is unisex, but...I don't consider Shayne to be.
It looks like she did it on purpose, like [livejournal.com profile] ladydreamfire said... =/

Sandy is short for Alexander so that's alright. Shayne is more male to me (I work with a Shane).

I used to babysit fraternal twins (a little boy and little girl) called Charidyn and Chayne. Try to figure that one out.
