Baby naming

So I've currently got baby boy number 4 in my belly and we are having the HARDEST time EVER agreeing on a name for him.  I've literally named every name under the sun, some I don't even really like, and he's vetoed them ALL.  *shakes fist in air*  My favorite choice is Ryker  LOVE it.  He HATES it.  He suggested Maximus briefly, and I was willing to compromise (would have preferred Maxwell or just Max) but then he vetoed HIMSELF.  Now he's bound and determined that he absolutely wants the name Lucian.

I don't know how I feel about Lucian.  I don't HATE it...but it doesn't roll out of my mouth very easily when I try to say it.  Also, totally no clue on a middle name.  This whole naming process is making me slightly miserable this round.

Thoughts?  Opinions?  On both the name Lucian and suggestions on possible middle names.

Side note one:  My 4 year old sons name is Kayson and it is by far my favorite boy name I've come across.

Side note two:  If we'd had a girl her name would have been Sylvana Rose (were never definite on spelling).  Most people seemed to hate it, but we were completely unphased by their hate :P

Side note three:  I love old fashioned girl names.  My #1 girl choice that he super-vetoed was Eleanor.

Personally, I hate Ryker. It just reminds me of the prison.

I like Lucian ok. Maybe Lucian Max? Or Lucian Ryker? Maybe a compromise for both could be Lucian Rex? (Or maybe Rye?)

Would you call Luc/Luke, or Lucian?

The only person I know with a Ryker IRL is named Rykers Prezley/Presley.

I would probably end up calling him Luc/Luke for short. I'm thinking I'd spell it Luc too. My Grandpa on my mom's side we all called Grandpa Luke (Luke was actually a shorter version of his last name) so it'd have a bit of a family tie in too. It's another thing that wins me over on the name.

I like the name Lucian myself. Perhaps you could combine two of your favorites, Lucian Ryker? Maxwell Lucian? Lucian Maxwell? Most of them sound like good combinations.

And I don't really dislike Lucian. I actually suggested it even with my first child. I think it's just my problems sounding it out lately? I'm not sure. My 4 year old says it though and it sounds like the most adorable name EVER when he says it. Maybe if I recorded myself saying it I'd realize it's not silly sounding like I feel it is? lol

Kayson and Lucien sound super super close to me so I'd personally avoid the name just on that front. I think Sylvana Rose is so pretty though, and I've never heard of a Sylvana before. I definitely agree with you on Eleanor - so pretty!

Yea I really adored Sylvana becuz I think the names Sylvia and Savannah are pretty. It's also unique though and I doubt there'd be another Sylvana in her class, which I'd prefer. The name actually is kind of a twist of a character name in an online game.

I can't decided if we have similar tastes or not. I'm not a huge fan of Ryker, Kayson or Sylvana (would prefer Sylvia) but I ADORE Eleanor/Ella and I love Max in whatever form because I would automatically shorten it to Maxxie or Max.

Personally I really like the name Lucian but I think that's only because I've been obsessing over Norman Reedus so much lately and his son's name is Mingus Lucien. I've always sort of drifted to more unusual names like that though. I have a vague recollection of liking it in high school as well for different reasons.

Ryker Lucian actually sounds pretty decent to me and if you're having trouble saying Lucian you would only have to do it when he was in trouble :P Or you could try some sort of variation with Luke/Lucas/Luca.

I actually have a pretty eclectic taste in names, so not surprising really. :P You should have seen my crazy long lists I used to give him. The Max names I found were Maxwell, Maxmilian, Maxim, Maximus, and then just Max. Maxmilian was a no for me. Maxim is really popular for the French I was told but it makes me think of that guy magazine, otherwise I think I really like that as well.

I secretly harbor the crazy hope (since I'm on my 4th child here afterall!) that I'll get pregnant with twin girls and I can get the name Eleanor in for one. Isabella was actually both of our number 1 girl name FOREVER, but Twilight made it too popular. There's literally 4 Isabella names in my sons kindergarten class. :/

I've actually been told I have really odd taste in names so it's nice to find someone who's cool about the weirder ones. My favourite girls' names are Innogen Kyle [specifically Innogen NOT Imogen] or Eloise (which I've been told I'm not allowed to shorten to Oise [pro: Weeze] because it would be cruel.) Favourite combination of boys names is Britain Atticus Maverick Foster because it just sounds amazing and the initials would make me laugh but I also like Bodhi and Levi.

I know a little boy name Maxim and he is in fact French. Maximus is sort of a badass name actually.

It might be unlikely in this day in age but I know several families that just kept going until they got their child of the other gender or even that just have five or six children.

I actually super love Eloise...ESPECIALLY with Oise as a nn! I know a woman name Louise that gets called Oise or Oisey even all the time, so it doesn't seem that cruel to me :P

I also love love love the name Atticus! I tried to get that one picked but the hubs didn't want it either. I even suggested it as a middle name for Maximus since he wanted a similar sounding middle name with it, but then he changed his mind on the whole works anyway.

I like Bodhi too. I just saw someone suggest the name Boden on a forum the other day and thought it sounded pretty cool. And I've suggested Levi as one of my top names for all 4 but it's always shot down.

My first two boys are actually from a previous marriage and have fairly traditional names becuz they got named after family members/the father. The oldest is Joseph James (his dad's name was Joseph and James was for Joe's brother that died a month before Joey was born). The next oldest is Kayson Joseph (Kayson we heard on Dog the bounty Hunter actually! and then we definitely wanted him to have part of his dad's name as well, hence the middle name). 7 weeks after Kayson was born, my husband died, so I've always been glad that we decided to name them both after him. I know we were toying with the idea of naming Joey "Lazarith" for awhile. Our girl name was "Zienna Rose", but we had boys so...yea.

My third boy with my new husband is Ethan Cain. Chris really wanted Cain to be part of the name cuz he thought it sounded badass. I wasn't so sure for a first name but thought it made a good middle name. Ethan, like I said, was like the 500th name I suggested and he FINALLY agreed on. Even though Ethan is super common now, I still think Ethan Cain sounds cool. Like he's a detective or main character in a thriller or horror book. :P

I also saw the name Cassio in a book recently and am slightly intrigued by it.

Zienna is super pretty! Maximus Atticus is a really awesome name. You need to fight harder because clearly the hubby doesn't know a good thing when he hears it haha. :P He needs to not be so pick or else this baby is going to end up Baby X. :)

Twins are super common in our family once the women hit 29, which is what I'm turning in March. So if we tried again, we'd almost for sure have twins. I'd be shocked if we didn't. It's usually fraternals too, though the occasional identical have shown up. I figure with my streak I'd end up with twin boys, fraternal or not :P What a naming nightmare that could be! ahhhhh!

You know, I've been told repeatedly that we get twins in our family but I have not seen evidence of it once. I always just hope for it because it's two babies, one pregnancy. I get awfully sick during my pregnancies for the duration, so twins would be ideal. More babies, less vomiting!

Also apparently PH Balance has something to do with what gender your baby will be. I've read for girls the mother should have a more acidic PH balance to kill off the weaker (but faster) boy sperm. When you ovulate also plays a role. You need to have sex like 3-4 days before your egg drops to give the boy sperm a chance to die off, but the girl sperm would endure. I've read other tips and ideas, that go from dieting and special recipe douching to attain the correct PH balance, and about sexual positions that will land the sperm in the proper place. Closer to the entrance is more acidic and therefore more likely to produce a girl. But these things are if you're desperate for one gender over the other. I have pages bookmark because they sum it up succinctly and refer to two different ebooks. One for dieting for Ph balance and one for douching for Ph balance.

I want a girl and all (I mean I have that name I just HAVE to use...silly reason but what can you do), but I have 2 girls so I wouldn't die if I got a boy. I'd love my baby so much I wouldn't care which gender came out so long at he or she was healthy! I'm just used to girls and they're so much more fun to buy clothes for.

I've heard the same thing about ph balance and ovulation. No clue on what to do about the Ph balance yet, but I DO know that I've been concieving specifically on those 2 super fertile days, so it's not really surprising I'm shooting out boys :P After hearing the Ph balance thing though, I'm wondering if I'm naturally balanced to kill of the girl sperm super easy. Like my womb is treacherous territory for girl sperm or something. If we ever try again, we'll definitely try the tricks and see if we can't land a girl (or twin girls :P ) but I wouldn't be surprised one bit if I had another boy/s! Honestly, I'm somewhat frightened of the idea of having a girl just cuz I've never had one yet! I'm soooooo used to boys. Plus, Chris would be SUCH a push over if we had a girl that she'd be a raging brat and I just see us having epic fights on how to raise her, probably specifically in the punishment category! hahaha...ahhh...just another relationship challenge to hit down the road I'm sure. *shrug*

Also, I've had the most amazing girly Dr. Suess onsies for YEARS now in case I get a girl...I refuse to give them to anyone else cuz I really really want them for my own daughter. I is greedy like that. That and my love for our girl names are one of the things that drives me to want a girl, so I share your silly reasons to have a girl moments. :D

I personally love Lucian. I think it's great. But you don't seem to love it, and that worries me. I want everyone to find a name that they fall in love with. I'm not trying to talk you into or out of any choice, but this community will absolutely help you come up with alternatives if you would like.

Ryker isn't my style but I think that if he's willing to be fair and let you choose the middle name since he's shanghai-ing the first name that Ryker would be an awesome choice. Lucian Ryker lastname. I know he hates Ryker, but come on, fair is fair! Or even as a second middle name!

yea I agree that fair is fair and I should have more say in the middle name if he's grabbing up the first. That's actually how it worked with the last boy, my 1 year old. His name was a power struggle for us as well and his name was actually one of the last ones I suggested and he FINALLY agreed with it, but then he called total dibs on the middle name.

I for some reason actually kind of like Lucian Alistair. I kind of don't mind Lucian Mortimer either. And Lucian Salazaar is a totally legit suggestion considering the only middle name he's completely sold on and wanting it Targaryen, like the Dragon family from Game of Thrones? Yea, that one. Lucian Targaryen. He's completely over the moon for that name. However, half the time he forgets how to say and spell it! lol

I wouldn't use most of the suggestions I came up with. I just wrote whatever came to mind, no matter how off the wall. They usually remind you of other names that way by means of association. I am glad you liked one or two. =) (I secretly liked Cromwell, and it must be the part of me that LOVES King Arthur and old Britain)

I've never seen Game of Thrones. But can I veto Targaryen? Please? PLEASE? I usually would NEVER tell you not to use something, but in this case I'll sit here and give you 100 more options if you just talk him out of that name lol. It's just one of those names that will be impossible to spell as a child.

It's one thing if you have a crazy last name. I knew a girl who had Zacharewski (that's how it's pronounced, it's spelling is slightly crazier and longer) and she had to learn her last name in hieroglyphics. 7th grade World Culture. That poor girl. My maiden name is 7 letters but 3 of those are A's so I had a MUCH easier time of it.

I think I've more than earned the right to throw a veto or a million out there by now, even if all he's offering up are like 3 whopping names. I just think it's hilarious that he claims to love the name so much, and then he's like "wait, how do u pronounce that again?" No. U can't claim love for something you don't remember 5 seconds later. I never expected him to be so ridiculous with naming a child. I feel like I should have taken this into consideration before we got pregnant. Like every girl should stop and question involvment with a guy "wait, will him and I have compatibility in the baby naming department?". I bet eHarmony has it even on their questionaires. It would make absolute sense to me at this point.

I agree, the naming compatibility will topple relationships if you let it. I think the hardest time we had together was our first child together (I had my eldest when I wasjust shy of 20) when we had to go through all the names we would never use because of who they reminded us of. Then everybody weighing in on what names they were using, equating to what names we couldn't use, and then finding names that we both loved.

I think he cared more in the beginning too, but I care so much more than I beat him down with debating names and now he would rather avoid one more debate on names by just nodding consent. It wasn't me nagging him, it was me being all geek love for names. This backfires on me sometimes as if I want actual input I have to look elsewhere. Luckily this community exists, because I won't confide any of my names to a person I know in real life. EVER AGAIN. :)

How are you pronouncing Lucian? I've heard it a number of different ways. I like loo-see-en or loo-shen. The name used to be on my list actually. I thought that, if I ever used it, I would use the loo-see-en pronunciation and call him Lucy for short because I dig girly nns on boys for some reason. Heh.

I think I pronounce it Loo-shin naturally, even though I'm metally trying to say it more like loo-shun like everyone else seems to say it. It seriously breaks my brain trying to say this name and I don't know why! I think today I'm for real going to record myself saying it naturally and see how it feels then.

Lucian Xavier I like a lot. I actually was sold on the name Lucian if it could be Lucian Alexavier...but the hubs has issues with it. I'm kind of debating bringing up the "I get dibs on the middle name because you did with the 3rd boy!" line tonight. We'll see what happens!

Lucian I know is supposed to be greek in origin and means "light". My guess is that it's bad wrap comes from a well-known greek satirist who's known for kind of ripping on the followers of Christianity. That kind of thing generally sticks with a name. I sometimes think people tie it in for sounding similar to Damian, which a lot of people I know think of as an evil sounding/devil name. I'm not really sure why Damian gets the bad wrap though or what it originally means/history is. I always assumed it was a pop culture thing or just from sounding like "demon".

My husband has veto rights, but he's way more flexible than that! I absolutely destroyed our list except for the top choice in either gender and came up with new ones that I felt fit better and were all ours. And he didn't give me any crap about it. I can pick any one of those names and it's cool. I love that feeling. I think I would've threatened to divorce your husband. I can be melodramatic though, I freely admit! It's the right of pregnancy hormones.

I sort of hope you announce you named the baby Lucian Ryker! Just because you love Ryker! Or Maximus Ryker. Make sure your favorite gets in there lady! <3

I'm not gonna lie, at times I harbor the secret hope that we'll for some reason seperate before the baby's born and then like, get back together after, just so I don't have to take him into consideration with naming the baby. It's horrible, and I'm completely unsure if it's the hormones or not, but it's something I borderline fantasize about.

Heh, we did split up during our first pregnancy together due to problems immigrating, and his overall problems dealing with an extended long distance marriage because of that. That pregnancy was the worst sickness wise so I was too sick to give a real damn that he wasn't there. Aside from not him to rub whatever aches, and get whatever craving I was having.

We reconciled to a small extent right before her birth (with a full reconciliation right after), but I did end up getting to choose her name by myself. I gave her his last name in the hopes that we wouldn't divorce. :) Now he's immigrated and we've had 2 more children since then, and still want more so it all worked out. <3
The longer we're married the better it gets. :)

But I swear, having sole naming rights was pretty awesome.

The idea of sole naming rights gives me chills of excitment. I'd be like "omg the POWER! So many choices!! And they're all MINNNNNNNNNNNNNE! bwahahaha" evil laugh and all. :P

Where to and where from did all the immigration happen? We're an immigration couple too! He's actually Canadian and I'm American. We tried the me and the oldest two going Canadian and it was DISASTROUS, though I can't tell if we just had a super unique case, the country sucks, or we sabotaged ourselves somehow. Seriously no clue. Now we've given up on Canada and we're trying to get him to the States instead. Immigration has been a rough one for us. We've been trying at it for YEARS now...it's exhausting and taken a toll on our relationship for sure! But we've made it through the very thick and thin, and same as you, the longer we go the better it gets. Up and down still, but compared to the beginning..yeaaaaa. It was close a couple times where we almost split while I was preggo with Ethan.

If we had twins, I would soooooooooooo be kosher with him having sole naming rights to one, and me to the other...no vetoes. I HATE VETOES. It'd be so much more fun! gah! But it also seems like a silly reason to be going for more children to :P I looked into tube tying recently and was sooooooo traumatized by the info that I just...i don't think I can do it! I told him though that if we go for more though, we all have to be legit in the SAME country and with two working vehicles that can carry all of us and be financially sound, cuz our grocery bill is already through the roof as it is!

Exactly the same. I'm American and he's Canadian. We had a lawyer and everything, and I don't know why we bothered. His paralegal was totally inept. She was from Ukraine, and her English was really broken but that wasn't the problem, we could usually make sense of the emails, but she kept losing paperwork and the passport photos we were required to submit individually. Like 3 times! The lawyer himself would sit on our case. Say step 2 was completed in October. He wouldn't get back to us until mid November. It was really dragged out. Actually I don't know how it would've turned out, but because of Remy's death he was able to cross the border for the funeral(he was red flagged for not going back when he told border guards he would be. Dumbass move, but you couldn't tell him otherwise.)and because of the hardship a friend of a friend got us in contact with a guy from immigration/homeland security that was able to file a different form and got his permanent residency pushed through. But we were separated for over 2 years with only one visit in between. He only saw Remy through photos and hearing him cry over the phone. He left while I was pregnant with Ava (our first child together) and I didn't get to visit until Ava was I dunno 15 months? That sucked. So yeah, immigration was a total bitch. And it ultimately took my son dying for it to possible. You have no idea how much I hate that fact and how angry I get with immigration. I can understand them wanting to put a stop to people marrying for a green card and then divorcing. But come on, we have children together. We're all the phone constantly throughout the day every day. At that point I think a paternity test for our daughter would've sufficed, and then okay you can go be with your family now. Ugh. Sore spot.

Greg (my husband) always said it would be easier to move to Canada, but I was reluctant to move away from my family. Now that I don't care so much anymore, he doesn't want to move back! In fact he wants to go like southwest where it's warm but not humid. Actually Florida would've been great if it weren't for the humidity and the hurricanes. One of my bestest lovey friends lives there and I would LOVE to live there with her but I'm terrified of getting caught in another Katrina. Especially with children. :( He goes back to trade school in a couple of weeks and finishing will only take a year, then he can get a great paying job. So I'm not worried about having another baby. I think at this point the longer we push it off the crankier I get, despite understand the logic behind the waiting. I'm just you know ready to have another baby!

I was in Canada for about a year and a half with my two boys trying to get us over there offially, but like your problems with lawyers and stuff here? Yea, times a million there. I am still to this day baffled by the lack of organization and ability to get ahold of someone and then get them to even DO something...it was ridiculous. I'm not sure if it was just the province we were in or what but...just wow. The only good thing is that we were able to all get health care while over there simply by stating that we were his dependents and in the process of immigrating. The quality of health care in our area left something to be desired, but *shrug* it was still nice to get, ya know? But other than that, everything was a nightmare. Right down to my inlaws hahahaha *sigh*

We finally made the decision to move to the States instead and I got talking to a lawyer around here and she sent paperwork and stuff, but the big hold up is we got married in Canada in August...and we STILL don't have our offiial marriage license, so we can't file a THING. Another bombshell she just dropped on us, I have to be making enough income on my own to support a family of 5 (soon to be 6 obviously) and I was a stay at home mom until recently picking up a part time job that makes no where near enough to qualify me. We need a joint-sponsor but no one I know makes enough either really, so...we're kind of at a loss there. Chris is the bread winner in the fam, but his income doesn't count. So now we're meeting with the lawyer to see about the idea of a work visa maybe? ugh...I don't know. I'm feeling a bit defeated after all these years on both sides of the border. :(

I had Ethan in Canada, and we applied for his citizenship, passport and SSN in July in Alberta....we've got NOTHING yet. And you can't get ahold of anyone in Canada on the phone, and their emails are like, automatic emails...I think in one of my response emails I said something snippy like "way to be useless" and they sent me the exact same response email for like the 6th time, so I really don't think an actual person looks at them. I talked to immigration on this side and they say they have no record of us ever applying for his stuff either. I have the reciept and everything and still nothing. I'm beyond frustrated. I had to be seperated from him from August to December because we finally gave up on the American passport and just applied for a Canadian one. Chris and him came over in December and we've decided Ethan is staying with me while Chris heads back to Canada next Monday. :( I'm reaaaaaaaaaaaally hoping he's able to come back in time for the baby's birth, but we're not really sure at all if he will or not. I'm a little freaked by this, but at least the baby will be born here. Ethan's uninsured though and technically I believe not allowed to be here, so we might be pushing it having him stay here. I really don't know. We're probably pushing all sorts of boundaries here. blah. I'm hoping the lawyer has some answers for us both in regards to getting Chris here and to figuring out what the crap happened to Ethan's status/citizenship. All I know is he's Canadian, and apparently even though I'm American, he has no American rights.

What trade is ur man in? Mines working on his welding apprenticeship at the moment...which is a super needed and well paying job around here, so we'll be doing good once he's offiially here I think.

If he's making a lot of money, you can put it in a bank account in YOUR name. Once you get to such a such you can provide that account as proof that you can support the family. I know that's how it worked in other countries. Or yes, you can get a joint sponsor if you have someone. We had to have somebody from the church sponsor us, and that was after assuring that person they wouldn't actually have to pay anything.

My husband is going for the machine tech course. Likewise he can do very well in a particular area of it.

LOL, I thought that too. If you're going to veto the other person's entire list, at least come up with more than one alternative, right?

The thing is he's suggested like 2 other names actually (wow. a whole two. I know) and then vetoed himself on them! I think I need to explain the veto rule to him...cuz I'm pretty sure it's supposed to only be for the ones u absolutely hate or something, not EVERY name anyone else suggests. and I'm pretty sure it's just craziness if you veto yourself:

Him: "How about Maximus?"
Him a minute later: "no no no. Not Maximus!"

What IS that?

Not to rip on my husband. I do love the guy...but baby naming is by far the most frustrating thing I've ever had to work together with him on.

Yea I think if we go with it, I'll call him Luc for short (spell it like that too probably). The hubs doesn't like it shortened like that, but I'll be damned if he's gonna restrict me on the nn on top of it all!

What are your other two names? For curiosity's sake...not for ideas. :P We're pretty much on Lucian or, if I can swing him back to the idea, Maximus.

d'awww! Bram was actually another suggestion of mine, vetoed of course. My mom actually threw a total cow about it lol. She was all "you better not name him that!" for some reason. I was like, whoa woman, chill. Some peoples reactions amaze me.

I hate Ryker. To me, the sound is...sharp? And it brings to mind Rikers Island.
I really don't like Lucian. I dislike the sound...and it reminds me of Lucifer. I once worked with a weird guy named Lucian and accidentally called him Lucifer, lol! Not to his face, though; thank goodness. ^^

Sylvana Rose isn't my style, but I think it's kind of nice. :)
