The actor Jason Bateman and his wife Amanda Anka welcomed their second daughter last week. Big sister Francesca Nora now has a little sister named...

Maple Sylvie

Now..I like Sylvie. But Maple? Is this actually a name or is the only significance the tree? Help me out here. Because I really do not like Maple as a name.

As much as I usually hate words as names, this one...isn't so bad? I think it's inherently more male, for some reason. It's kind of cool though.

However, Francesca and Maple don't really go together.

I just got a new name book with all sorts of lists of the top 10 everything in it. Under trees Maple was up there so I found it really odd to see a post where it was actually used and as a first name. I too immediately thought of Mabel. My kindergarten's principal was a Mabel. She was strict but fair, and I like her name. Maple sounds so close that I like it too. Plus it's a cute nod to Canada. I'm pretty sure Jason Bateman is Canadian.

Also, I love the username. Love Dumbledore, and that was one of the prize moments of the series.

Right! I actually thing it's cute, and I think May is a cute nickname.

And thank you! I get happy when people recognize it.

I like that it's a nod to Canada, but Jason Bateman is from NY so that's kind of weird...

I stand corrected! You are right and he is from New York. I could've swore that I watched something that said he was Canadian, but it's no matter at all really. :)

As much as I love plants, trees & flowers as names I don't like Maple. Sylvie is cute but strikes me as more of a nickname than a full name. However, Francesca Nora is an adorable name.

Maple was the heroine in a fairly well known book by Anchee Min. Maybe that is where they got the name? I like the name because it reminds me of the book, but I agree that Maple and Francesca aren't really the same style. Maybe they will call her Sylvie instead!

I love Sylvie. Maple isn't my style, but I'm surprised to find myself thinking it's not completely awful. Mabel is a favorite of mine, so I'm sure it's just the similarity I like. But the most troubling thing to me here is that the baby's most likely named Maple Bateman, which sounds like a little kid trying to say "maple bacon." Maple Anka doesn't sound so hot, either, nor does Maple Bateman-Anka, and as someone else said, Maple and Francesca sound very mismatched as part of a sibset.

Really like big sister's name. The other one, not so much.

Hmm. Maybe they were thinking Mabel, and didn't know how to spell it (hehe)

Not a fan, but it's not as bad as Apple.

Okay let's agree that Jason Lee's naming his kid Pilot Inspektor had to be the worst call ever.

I don't know, there are still worse ones than Pilot.

I like Apple, though.

I was thinking that. But then I started to think of Reignbeau, and then other ones and I couldn't decide...

Hmmm. Probably. Though Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily is pretty bad, too....

Oh, and all these people calling their kids Bear. What is that????

Francesca Nora is absolutely gorgeous... so Maple Sylvie is just weird.

I wonder if I'm the only one who immediately thought maple syrup, since Sylvie has the same first two letters. I love Sylvie but not really into Maple as a name.

HAHAHAHAHAHA. I didn't make that total connection to SYlvie vs SYrup. Kinda funny now that you point it out. I just thought Maple Leaf.

Makes me think of Maple Batalia, a young woman who was murdered in Canada recently. Cheery.

I hated it at first, but after seeing a couple more positive comments, I don't think Maple is sooooo bad. I'm into a lot of Canadian fandoms so I do like the Canada connection. I agree with whoever said it seemed more masculine though. That was one of my first thoughts. But then, it does sound a lot like Mabel and May would be an obvious nn so...I just don't know anymore! <-- naming angst. lol.

I don't like it with Sylvie, perhaps because I don't care for Sylvie. I really don't know what would have been better though. Maple Charlotte? Maple Claire? Um...I don't know.

Anyway, I think Francesca Nora is great! But Maple makes for a really odd sibset.
