[identity profile] behindgrey-eyes.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My mum just came to tell me that one of the little girls she childminds is now a big sister. Her name is Emily and her newborn baby sister is Holly.

WDYT?

My mum and I agreed that we're not huge fans of the set as Emily is very classic and Holly is more modern sounding. Separately, they're lovely names but I don't adore them together. Might be partly the Y sound but my sister and I are both As at the end of our names and I think our sib-set works.

Emma-lee. Holl=lee.

To me, they both have Lee on the end, and that's a bit too similar.

My friend has a Stephanie and is talking about Emily if she had another baby. I think that sounds better. Both classic names, both three syllables, both sound good together.

In general, I don't like sibsets to have that ee sounds at the end of names.

Though, saying that my sister and I are informally known as Becky and Danni and I think that works okay. (obviously really we're Rebecca and Danielle which is totally different sounding.)

The story goes that my parents were so sick of agonizing what to name me my dad just said 'I like Danny... for a girl or a boy' and my mom just said, 'okay.' So it was either Daniel or Danielle.

I think they are too similar. I don't believe in choosing a name because of the way it sounds with a sibling's name. If you like a name, you should use it.

While I disagree that they don't match style wise, I do agree that they are too similar sounding. The only thing that helps is that Emily is 3-syllables and Holly is 2-syllables.

I actually can't stand the idea of siblings being 'sets'. I don't think the names of siblings need to work perfectly together. Again, they're separate individuals... not sets. That said, I like both Emily and Holly and I don't think they sound at all out of place together.

I like Emily and Holly. I think I'm in the minority.

I think stylistically they work fine, but I don't like the same sound of the endings together.

Yawn. So boring, doesn't interest me at all.

Whereas I can agree with not wanting to do similar sounding names (rhyming or alliteration especially) to avoid confusion, I don't see the problem here. My girl names both end in a. Whatever future girls I may have will also end in a. Just the way of feminine names mostly. The -ee sound at the end is also a really common event. So Holly and Emily don't sound alike to me. Also I disagree with them not matching up. Holly may sound more modern, but it's not THAT modern. I think it sounds nice with Emily.
