Tom?

I need a name that is not Thomas or any variant of Thomas that "Tom" could still be used as a nickname for. Mythological names are preferred. The more usual, the better.

Thompson?

We call my father Tom sometimes, but our surname is Thompson so...that's probably not useful, considering it's a variation of son of Thomas. There's not really many names with Tom in, but there are a lot of variations of Thomas that don't look like Thomas?

Te'oma is the name that Thomas "evolved" from. It is Ancient Aramaic.

The Gaelic spelling of Thomas is Tomhas, but people might just think you can't spell.

Other than that, I can only think of Thompson, Thomson... Tomlin...

Maybe Thomar. It's Australian Aboriginal, means river.

Er, what's wrong with Thomas?

Oh. I didn't know you were naming a character. I thought you wanted it for a kid and we've had a lot weird-name posts lately, so yeah...

Antonio Carlos Jobim (bossa nova composer/musician) went by Tom.

I think Thor could pull off Tom as a nickname.

Babynames.com suggests:

Tom Tomai Tomas
Tomer Tomi Tomiko
Tommy Tomoe Tomoka
Tomoko Tomomi Tomoya

Also anything that's usually "dom" could be skewed over, like Tominic or something.

If it's for a character, name the character something completely different and just have them randomly nicknamed Tom for some childhood antic. If it's a girl it could be because she used to be a tomboy. If it's a boy, give him a first name he hated and have him decide to rename himself Tom.

I mean there are ways around using Tom without it being the official name. That's my suggestion, because I can't think of a name that fits those perimeters.

Welsh form of Thomas is Tomos. No good?
