I don't know if I worded the subject right but, oh well.

I never really liked the idea of combo names even though my name is a combo name (Millard and Brenda=Melinda) until my sister had my niece.  She and her boyfriend had been struggling with finding a name that would be 'Italian enough' to satisfy him while also remaining something my sister actually liked.  Anyway, the day she was born (which was incredibly eventful to say the least), they surprised us with this name:

GiaLena Marie S.

Gia was a name my sister liked.
Lena is her boyfriend's grandmother's name.
Marie is my sister's middle name and her boyfriend suggested it since my sister nearly died giving birth.

The name took a bit for me to get used to but I think it fits my miracle niece perfectly now!

For curiosity's sake, what do you think?  And have you seen any other "combo" names like this that you liked?

My name is technically a combo name (Kathy + Warren = Karen), although I don't think my parents meant it that way. I'm not really a fan of combo names though.

I don't really like GiaLena. I think it kind of difficult to pronounce, and I don't like random capital letters in a name.

GiaLena is kind of cute. I like the idea behind it :)

My friend is Rosanne because her grandmothers were Rosemary and Annetta. Other than that I don't know anyone with combo names that have a meaning.

I like them. I could do without the extra capital L in the middle, but that personal pref. Gialena (Gee-ah-lean-ah?) Marie rolls off the tongue nicely.

Agree with you. The capital letter makes it look like a made up name. With it just written as Gialena, it could be a 'normal' exotic sounding name.

I'm not a fan, I'll be honest... I love Lena but I think it looks odd smooshed with Gia. I don't know, something about it doesn't flow when I say it too.

I don't mind combo names if they make up a legit name.

I really like the name Gia and the name Lena but I don't like the combo of them together as one name. I'd be okay if there was a hyphen but otherwise I feel like I'm saying them too quickly.

When I was born everyone wanted me to be a boy because the majority of my cousins are female. Everyone had boy names they wanted my parents to name me so when I was born a girl my mom said screw them all and wouldn't let anyone have ANY choice in the matter. She didn't want me to be named after anyone and she wanted my name to be my own. Four years later when my sister was born I guess she'd had enough with the nagging and gave my sister the middle name Karla-Ann. Karla for my Opa and Ann for three of my four great grandmothers. Problem solved.

I'm not usually a big fan of smush names though. Renesme (spelling?) from Twilight comes to mind...

A friend of mine was named Delainey, combining Doug and Jolaine. I think it really works for her, without being too obviously a combo.

I don't really like Gia to begin with (although I like Lena) so I really don't like GiaLena. I think it would have been better without the capital L. Are they pronouncing it Gee-ah-lean-ah or Gee-uh-lain-uh? Or Gee-uh-len-uh?

My middle name is a combo of my grandmothers' names. Valeda + Patricia = Valecia (Vuh-lee-sha).

Forgot to mention that I like my middle name :) I like that it has a special meaning to my family, it's unique without being wild, and I think it looks and sounds pretty. In general, I think combo names are a cute idea, although it obviously depends on what the combo turns out to be.

my best friend growing up... well, her middle name was 'maellen' a mixture of mae and helen, for the grandmothers. i never liked it and always thought it was weird, even though i understood the thinking behind it. not to mention, her first name was meagan and they pronounced it MAY-GAN, not meh-gan. i've never heard it pronounced that way anywhere else but maybe i'm wrong?

I went to school with a girl named Meaghan, and she pronounced it may-gan, but if anyone called her meh-gan she wouldn't correct them, so I didn't know the correct pronunciation for years.

I have a co-worker whose name is Stacey and her husband's name is Jeremy, so they named their child Jace. It's cute and suits him well, but it always seems like a nickname to me instead of a full name.

My best friend is named Ana-Rae, after her parents, Ann and Ray. They had to name her on the spot, for a long and crazy story that involves tumors, unknown pregnancies and not thinking she was going to make it because she was 3 months early...
