to name my son Ares
Yes, yes I know who Ares was in greek mythology (and that the name means: bane or ruin... or male)  and how not even his father was fond of him but *pouts* I loooove the way it sounds!! I could pretend to be naming him after Mars but okay Mars is just not nice but... ugh how horrible would I truly be to name my child this?

The other form of this I like is Aries but that doesn't sound so pretty in Spanish.

Aries = Aw-rhee-es

Ares = Aw-res

Personally, I love old Greek names so I don't think it would be horrible of you to name your son Ares. Just because a name "means" something doesn't make it prophecy. I say go for it! :)

I agree with this. I think it's cute :)

Mythological names are almost always pretty loaded (outside of a few like Helen, Cassandra, Diana, and Hector, which are pretty mainstream). Since Ares is such a violent god and this kid may eventually ask what his name means/where it comes from, you might want to save this name for a pet.

Not trying to judge you, just advocating caution. Then again, I'm probably still reeling from the woman who named her child Loki. You're probably pretty safe with Ares, compared to that.

I like the way Achilles is said in French, rather than English, is it similar in Spanish?

And back to the op I like the name Ares. Not sure if I would name my kid though though..

Not to nitpick about something irrelevant, but Cassandra isn't loaded? I think it's the most loaded one of those four mentioned! Unless I'm misunderstanding the use of "loaded" here...

I agree. It's unfortunate, but... yeah. There aren't many mythological names that I'd be willing to use on my child(ren).

I love it, actually.

Aries is actually one of the more common "mythical" names. I don't think it'd be a huge deal. If you had your son in March-April and he was born under the Aries constellation that would make it even more appropriate.

Ares is still okay IMO~

I love Ares :D I really like Greek mythology though as well XD I'd love to call a child Athena :)

I've also thought of using Athena before:) And I agree Ares is great. And I don't agree with the above commenter on how the child may feel about the meaning of the name. I mean, by the time he's old enough to understand it you could say that regardless of the meaning, you thought it was a wonderful name. Maybe he'll be strong and cunning, somethings you have to be to be the god of war, I don't think it HAS to be as bad or evil as some might take it.

My first name is a "large open plain" so that's kinda like fat, too, LOL.

I love Athena as well! And I would consider naming my child Artemis (nn Art).

Ares is a great name! I personally don't think of the name/the god with a negative connotation. Not sure if there are any nerds in this comm who are into the Percy Jackson series but when that movie came out, I went to the premiere dressed as Athena and my boyfriend, who is a United States Marine, as Ares. We thought it fitting, him being a marine, and Ares being the god of war. It was awesome!

Do it. I love it.

Also I had a cat named Ares.

Also about the meanings thing. My name means soft haired. Wtf. And youthful. SO boring and I hate it. God of war is at least interesting!

I don't have anything at all against mythological names. And I don't think any name should be considered "loaded" I mean, Adolph is still used, even after Hitler right? Damien is still fairly popular and that's often associated with the devil. It shouldn't be a deterrent. Something to consider sure, but not necessarily a deal breaker.

I like Ares, I think it could work. But after reading the other comments I have to say I really prefer Achilles a hundred times more!

In English I pronounce Ares, and Aries pretty much exactly the same. AIR-EEZ.

Ares isn't exactly the most desirable god to be named after, but it still is a pretty cool sounding name (and pretty manly sounding too). And there are worse, like Hades or Hephaestus lol

I agree, it is definitely manly sounding!

Ares isn't my favourite god, or my favourite name, but I think it's kind of awesome anyway, because I love mythology. And it's certainly not the worst name to use, I'd say go for it.
