Sibset heard today: Bay Atlas and Oscar Hercules. WDYT? I quite like Bay, it's growing on me, but it doesn't really go with our last name :( (I'm assuming Bay is a boy in this case.) What are some of your favorite one-syllable names?

Also how do you feel about names and then using nicknames? My given name is Rebecca but since the day I was born my parents (and everyone else) called me Becky. But I hate that awkward moment when you're someplace new and someone calls you 'Rebecca' and assumes it's that but I feel weird being called that and have to say 'actually it's Becky.' It's also awkward if I have to initial something- do I go with BL or RL? Some children in my kindergarten class are known as Melissa or Olivia in school and seem happy with that but parents call them Missy and Livvy, respectivally.

My top three choices for names right now are these:
For a girl, Poppy Madeline, Nieve Jaime and Emily Grace.
For a boy, James Albert, James Geoffrey or Archer James (I'm undecided!) George Aiden and Brendan Kurt.

How do you pronounce Nieve? Like Niamh?

Bay reminds me of "Bey" and then I instantly think of Beyonce for some reason. I kind of like Oscar, not a fan of the rest. Atlas is cool in its own regard, I guess.

As a Jennifer, I am SO GLAD my parents named me Jennifer and not Jenny (which, like you, my whole family calls me and has since day 1). I'm kind of in the opposite boat as you. Once I reached adulthood, I felt Jenny was too young sounding and I prefer to go by Jenn now. I'm ok with Jennifer and Jenny, but I'm glad I have options. If I were Jenny I suppose I could switch to Jenn, but Jennifer just sounds like a FULL name, and that I like. I hope to give my future child a full name with nickname options. Either that or a name that is pretty nickname proof. I would never use a nickname as a full name (Like Jenny instead of Jennifer).

I like Poppy, Madeline, Emily, Geoffrey, and Archer. Is Nieve like Niamh or Neve? If so, love that--just not the Nieve spelling. My middle name is Neva, so I'm a bit biased. :-)

Some of my favorite one syllable names:
Bea (would only use as a nn for Beatrice or something)
Maeve
Fern
Clare
Ada
Kate (nn for Katherine)
Jane
Liv
Neve/Niamh
Pearl
June (nn for Juniper but I do like it on its own as well)
Mae
Ruth
Rose

Beau
Reid
Glenn
Quinn
Rhys
Dean
Pierce
Jack
Rhett (probably as a nn for Everett though)

I'm sure I'm forgetting some, but that's all I could think of.

Not a big fan of Bay except maybe as a NN for Bayley. Bay Atlas kind of sounds like a type of textbook, imo. I like Atlas and Hercules for sibset middle names, though. Still a connection but not so in your face.

I think it's weird/rude for someone to call you by one name if you've introduced yourself as another - even if they're both technically the same name/your name. But I guess it depends on the situation. Try just a polite "Oh, you can call me Becky" or "Just Becky" and that should get it across without being too awkward (hopefully). In my situation, my family only refers to me as Catherine and the majority of my friends only refer to me as Cathee so I'm pretty used to going back and forth without thinking about it. I don't mind letting people choose which they'd prefer to call me.

I love Emily Grace and James Albert. Really, all four names on their own but I really like the pairings.

I love Atlas. It's on my list, and I would absolutely use it.

I'm not too big on place/thing names, so I wouldn't recommend Bay. And I'm always wary of using mythological names outside of Diana or Helen or Cassandra or Hector. Oscar is really nice, though.

I really like Poppy Madeline and Emily Grace and just about all of the boys names.

As for nicknames, you should probably just tell someone which name you prefer as soon as you meet them or as soon as they say it. People often call me "Mary" and I just say, "It's Mary Grace," and they usually get it. Brief and direct is probably the best approach.

Favorite one-syllable names:

Hal
Jude
Luke
Paul
Dean
Clay
Pierce
Nick
Chris

Claire
Jane
Grace
Jo
Faith
Anne
Eve
Hope
Rose

I actually like Atlas, although I doubt I could ever name someone that.

I like Poppy, James and George!
