I know folks can find a way to make fun of anybody for any reason, but do you think that Oscar makes it too easy? I like the name, that's my only worry.
When I was a little girl, we had a Dachshund named Oscar, so I'm fond of the name. However, I do still remember the jingle (do they still use it?) for Oscar Mayer Wieners.
"Oh I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener that is what I'd truly like to be 'cuz if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener everyone would be in love with me!"
There's also the bologna one. I don't know why but I can remember stupid jingles for products they don't even make anymore! LOL
Oh, jeeze. I was just thinking of Oscar the Grouch, hadn't considered the Oscar the lunch meat. :)
On the other hand, my mom used to sing that song to me when I was little, so it gives me warm fuzzy feelings. That probably doesn't help prevent teasing, though, huh?
Do they even have the Oscar commercials with the song anymore? There is Oscar the grouch, but I think Sesame Street has revamped and he no longer lives in the garbage?
I think people can make fun of any name, so go for it.
There is that fighter/boxer? Named Oscar...Oscar De...lahoya? Something like that, that was actually the first thing that came to my mind and I don't watch that type of stuff! But since he's a kick butt sort of guy and I know a lot of people, guys especially, would know his name, I wouldn't see it as teasable.
I have a friend named Oscar and he doesn't get teased for it and says he never did. He does, however, sometimes get teased otherwise just because he's a bit of a class clown type, lol. However, we're in a very urban, very multicultural area where names are extremely diverse and I don't know if he would've gotten more negative feedback in a more traditional area? But even so, like the other commenter said, kids who are going to tease will find something so I wouldn't worry too much.
if I ever name a kid that (it's on my list) I will make it very clear the same day I make the announcement that anybody calls him "Oscar the Grouch" will never talk again. literally.
My sister goes to school with a boy named Oscar and he's never been targeted because of his name as far as I know. I would say that Oscar the Grouch and Oscar Mayer are not the most scarring things in the world---he could brush them off pretty easily, like every Peter who gets called Peter Pan or every Luke who gets called Young Skywalker.
I had a very free-spirited and awesome college student in my classes named Oscar. Loved him. He had a HUGE personality though and kind of rocked it out.
I have an Oscar, he's five and just started preschool this year. He has never really gotten the whole Oscar the Grouch bit (although we do LOVE to buy him Oscar the grouch t-shirts. even when he wears THOSE he still doesn't get teased about it. bad parents). The worst he's ever gotten is being called "Oscar Meyer" by multiple family members. In the beginning when he was a super little baby they used to sing the entire song to him. I guess they got a bit tired of that so now they call him "Oscar Meyer" out of habit. He doesn't really care one way or the other. Oh and by the way he does seem to love his name. and wears the Oscar the Grouch shirts with full pride (He just wore one to his christmas party at school, Oscar the Grouch with a santa hat on saying "Bah Humbug". he thought it was really funny). I mean if you think about it Oscar the Grouch isn't really THAT bad. It's almost a completely laughable tease, even at their young age.
