I don't really mind Odyn with a "y" but I agree with you on Ulli. I've gotten used to it since I see her every week and she's so cute, but I hated it to begin with.
Is it just me, or is it odd for a church going family to name their children after other gods? I mean, my Dad apparently flipped when mom wanted to name her dog Loki; I can't imagine what he would have said if she'd suggested a norse deity for a child.
Lol I actually never even thought of that :) I personally love the Greek myths and so I love a lot of those names. My cat's name is Apollo, which my mom is fine with, but I've said for years I want to get a black cat and name it Hades and she flips out haha. Anyway, I personally don't think it's that strange since I love names for their own sake, but now that you mention it I'm surprised no one in my church has said anything about it yet. Most of them probably don't know where the names come from.
I don't know what denomination of Christianity your church is, but they could probably get away with it if they used biblical names for middle names, like Freya Mary, Odyn Jesse, and Ulli David (I'm guessing the last one is a boy?).
Huh. I checked a name book that listed names from varies mythologies in male and female columns, and under the Norse section, they only had "Ull" under male, no mention of Ulli under either, but someone below said they knew a guy who went by Ulli as a nickname, so I assumed it was a boy.

Loki would be a cute name for a dog, but I couldn't use it for a child---too many crazy connotations no matter where you look. Interestingly, during spotlight week, there was a post from a woman who was proud of giving her children really unusual names, and one of them was a young son named Loki. She said she chose the name because she knew he would be cute and mischievous and he apparently is; that's probably great when he's two, but once he's old enough to read/Google/watch a movie, there could be issues...
How do they pronounce Ulli? I have a friend in Iceland named Ulfar (male) and his nickname is Ulli, pronounced Ool-i (the i is said the same as the i in 'it').
I like all 3 names, just not the spelling of Odyn. :p
Ha! I thought it was pronounced YULE-EE. I guess it's pretty close though. I'm sorry is Ulli part of Norse mythology? I don't remember it....I got the other two immediately and I think Freya is a really pretty name!
As far as I can tell (5 minutes of Googling) Ulli is... nothing. I could not find anything about it, other than it being the name of an airport? According to Nameberry (nameberry.com) it's a nickname for Ulla, which according to Behind the Name (behindthename.com) is a derivative of Ulrika, neither of which have anything to do with Norse mythology. I have no idea where they found this name!
