Welsh name pronunciations

When I post Birth Announcements, a lot of people ask about the pronunciation of various Welsh names. I had a bit of a scout around and wondered if this website would be helpful at all? You can hear audio clips of the names being said.

my name is Rhian and they pronounce the "Rh" sound with quite a bit of flair lol i don't even say my name that way!

Rhian is originally Welsh, and that's how it would traditionally be pronounced :) People make different choices depending on where they live, though.

i know lol my mother is welsh. We just don't say it that way because we're in Philadelphia and it's already a very challenging name to pronounce for most people.

My friend's name is Siân, pronounced "Shawn". Her dad is Welsh.

That's interesting - possibly another example of pronunciations tweaked depending on location? In Wales, Siân is pronounced 'Shaan' (with a long 'a' sound, but not quite 'ar'). Shawn would be pronounced 'Shorwn' with a very rounded 'or' sound.
