Is Lia a legitimate name for a girl? I'm usually against "creative" spellings but I don't like the way Leah looks.

What could Lia be a nickname for besides Amelia?

Personally, I like it!

To be honest, Leah (Lay-a) and Lia (Lee-ya) are two entirely different names to me. Of course it depends on how you pronounce either of them, but to me it has nothing to do with creative spelling :>

Lia could also be a nickname for Talia, Julia, Natalia, Olivia, Liana, Liara, Iliana...

Hmm. In my part of the world Leah and Lia are pronounced the same way.

Same. Leah and Lia are both pronounced "Lee-AH" here.

Yep. I thought this was a given in my part of the world (US) and even more so in this part of the country (South East.) But my daughter is Leah (LEE-ah) and in her short 9 months we've already had several people pronounce it as LAY-ah. Here I thought we were giving her a simple, classic name! :P

Where do you get Layah from Leah???

Then again, I don't understand how Lea Michelle is a Leah. To me, that would be pronounced Lee.

I always read it as Leyah!

I always through Leah was just pronounced Lee. I only know one person with the name and she is always called Lee.
However, I know a Lea, and that's lee-ah.

I was going to say that when I first read the name Leah, I pronounced it like Lee.

Oddly enough I see it as Lee-ah, except when a friend post about her daughter Rachael-Leah in which case the first thing in my head is Rachael lee.

Where I'm from Leah is usually said Lee-ya. I have met a lot of Leahs, strangely, and only one is pronounced Lay-a.

I've seen Lia, though I'm not sure if it was a nickname or a given name. Fwiw, I think it works well as a given name. Could be short for Olivia or Cordelia though.

I've known a few different people with the spelling Lia.

One girl used Lia short for Evangelia.

One of my favorite baby girl names is Lianna.

I pronounce Lia and Leah the same, Lee-ah. I know people with both spellings and they pronounce them the same. FWIW, I prefer Leah to Lia, but Lia would make an excellent nickname for a lot of girl names.

I know one little girl who goes by that name, but she spells it Liya. If you look it up, it seems like a legitimate name. I prefer Léa myself though.

Yes, it's legitimate. Here (Netherlands) maaany people are called Lia (spelled just like that). Leah & Lia are two different names here, but I'd pronounce Leah like Lia in English. If you'd rather use it as a nickname, what about...

Eliana
Lillian/Liliana
Cecelia/Cecilia
Julia
Ophelia
Aurelia

Good luck!

Yes!! My friends cousin just had a little girl two weeks ago and named her Lia. She is sooo cute!

I think Lia is a softer spelling of Leah and I like it.

Lia could also be short for Aurelia.

I went to school with a girl named Lia and now I work with a different Lia, so yeah, definitely a legit name! Where I'm from, it's also the name of a chain of car dealerships. I believe it's the owner's surname.

I like the Lia spelling better than Leah. My only association with it is Lia Sophia jewelry.

Could be a nickname for Liana.

Other possible ends in 'Lia' suggestions:
Camelia
Cordelia
Emmalia (I'd pronounce this Emma Lia)
Julia
Lilia

Lia is totally a legit name and I prefer it WAAAAY over Leah. Traditional spelling or not, I'm not usually a fan of unnecessary Hs in names. And considering all the confusion Leah seems to be causing (does it rhyme with gee, Kia or playa?) Lia seems to be the safer bet in terms of set pronunciation :P Plus, looks way prettier.

I think Lia is really pretty! I like the sound of the name, and for some reason it looks much prettier than Leah, at least to me.

(A wee bit late...)

Lia is legit. My parents were going to spell my name that way but switched it at the very last minute. I'm Leah now, pronounced Lee-uh.
