Watching "Yours, Mine and Ours" (1968). It's based on the true story of a widower with ten children who marries a widow with eight children.

WDYT?

It also got me thinking of the practice of using similar names on siblings (Rosemary and Mary, Janette and Jean). I think there were fewer names to choose from back then than there are today, but it still happens today. What do you think about this?

Personally I wouldn't ever name my children so that the name of one could be the nickname of the other, like Rosemary and Mary. On the other hand, I don't really see anything wrong with naming your children similar names (like Janette and Jean) if you like that sort of thing.

All I can hear in my head is the "Brady Bunch" theme.

I guess I could see how non-name geeks might not even think about it, but I dislike the use of similarly-based names for siblings. I also don't like when two names that essentially mean the same thing are used together (Susan Lily, for example), although, again, I don't expect most people to be as aware of it.

I can't believe I never commented on this.

Yeah, parents mainly stuck to Top 100 and Top 200 names a lot more than they did today, and I don't think having multiple Marys was too bizarre back then, especially if one was Rosemary or "Mary + Middle Name" and another daughter had Mary as a middle name. My mother (5th of 13 kids) is Helen Mary (after her grandmother) ; the 4th child is Mary Theresa (Terry); 7th is Margaret Mary (Molly); and 9th is Marion Clare (Marion is a form of Mary). I don't think any of their peers ever thought twice about it.
