You know that Lauren, Evelyn and Aubrey are generally girls names, right?

My understanding is Loren=boys, Lauren=girls. Also, you have Allison listed under unisex. That's another where spelling counts. Allison is a boy name, meaning son of Allen and Alison is a girl name, from the french diminutive for Alice.

All my knowledge comes from the internet and may be incorrect. the above is just what I've read.

Behind the Name says that Lauren was originally a diminutive of Laurence, which is very logical looking at the spelling, so it was a masculine name first.

I never thought about that, but that does make sense.

I'd have to say Allison, Evelyn and Lauren may have once been boy names, but they are mostly girls names now. Hearing any of those, I would assume the person is a girl, and I would find it weird to learn that any of them are boys, as I think girls names on boys are kinda weird. Might not be the most ridiculous naming gaffe, but it's up there.

If you like a name, you like a name, and that's the bottom line, but I see a lot of those names and I think "girls' names" and I think a lot of other people would think that too.

Wait, what? Not only was I not tearing you a new one about anything, I don't even think you made a gaffe. You listed both spellings of Alison and listed them under the unisex category. I was simply telling you an interesting tidbit that I had read online. I really didn't mean any offense, and I definitely don't think you made any type of gaffe.

I didn't know that Allison was originally male, although to mean "son of Allen" does make sense; everyone I know with that spelling is female.

I live in the UK and I've never met a female Aubrey. Over here it's the kind of name you only really see on older men.

Loren I could get behind as a unisex name, and Aubrey actually sounds male to me (maybe the other commentor is thinking of Audrey, which is a girls' name)

Evelyn, though, yikes. I think naming a boy Evelyn would be sentencing him to a lifetime of torment ._.

Any boy called Evelyn... he'd need to be pretty good in a fist fight.

I actually went to college with an Aubrey and an Aubrie, both females. Just throwing that out there.
