Nov. 9th, 2011 02:09 amLike so many others, I'm new here thanks to the com being spotlighted. I've been looking through baby name books since I was a teenager and making lists soon after. Part of my fascination comes from being a writer, while another is playing role-playing games (I miss my old gaming group!). The main reason is I really want to be a mother, and so I have two top-five lists, one for girls and one for boys. It changes with time, but currently stands as such:
Girls
Phoenix Cynthia
Neva Lorraine
Eden Genevieve
Wren Meredith
Sabrina Elizabeth
Boys
Phineas James
Grayson Jeffrey
Colin Jonathon
Beckett Christopher
Elliott Dennis
So what do you think?

Date: 2011-11-09 02:39 pm (UTC)I used to/still do want to name one of my children Wren or Meredith. Also Elliot or Dennis. Mostly because my Dad's name is Dennis but now I'm feeling using my Dad's middle name instead: Elwood.

Date: 2011-11-09 03:54 pm (UTC)And that's interesting about the name Dennis. My dad's middle name is Dennis, which is one of the reasons I picked it. (The other is I have a good friend with the name) I thought about going with his first name, Dale, but something just didn't click.
I know someone a few years younger than me with the name Elwood. He's a great musician with his own band. It can work. I still always think of the Blues Brothers when I hear it, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing...

Wren Meredith
I love the sound of those together, and I like the idea of Phoenix as a first name for a girl - it's the tippy top of unusual, but has all sorts of positive connotations. Wren is unusual too but not weirdly so - I've always liked it too. Have you considered Ren (as form of Renee)? Then you avoid the dowdy bird context. Anyway for both the classic middle names go with them perfectly - you've really thot this thru! :)
Colin Jonathon
Beckett Christopher
I'm a sucker for classic English names - you can't go wrong with Colin, while I think Grayson is rather too yuppie trendy right now, but that could change. On the other hand, I love that you picked Beckett! I adore that name too and don't think it gets enough namesakes these days! it's a good british name but you won't find that many classmates with that name.

Date: 2011-11-09 04:12 pm (UTC)You would not believe how long it took me to settle on a first name that satisfied me.
With Wren, I admit that I used it for a role playing character first, and then I realized that I really liked it. The character was from England, actually. (and I gave her sisters named Piper and Lark in her backstory) I'm not sure I care for the Ren spelling; that always makes me think of the cartoon Ren and Stimpy, and that's not a positive connotation for me. I'm totally okay with the bird/nature association the "W" adds.
:-) I picked Colin because I really like the actor Colin Mochrie and the character in the novel The Secret Garden (he was the child in the wheelchair). And when I picked Grayson it wasn't nearly as popular, I promise. I just still like it despite its popularity. And Beckett, I hadn't thought of it as a first name until Candice Olsen said on her designing show Divine Design that she had used that name for her son. And suddenly it was like, well of course! There's the playwright Samuel Beckett, and I adore the character Doctor Sam Beckett from the TV series Quantum Leap. Total win.

Date: 2011-11-09 06:50 pm (UTC)How would you pronounce Neva? Long e or short e?
I'm also a big fan of Grayson and Elliott, but I think of Elliott as more of a girls name these days. Not that I wouldn't use it for a boy. I love it for both.

Date: 2011-11-09 09:57 pm (UTC)I like names that are different but not too unusual, ones that you're not likely to hear very often. Grayson *used* to be in that category, as in when I fell in love with it. That might be part of the reason I lean more toward Phineas as my number one boys name at the moment. That, and I really like the show Phineas and Ferb. :-)
