Spotlighter Here
Nov. 8th, 2011 07:37 pmHi everyone! I am yet another person who was thrilled to see this community in the spotlight. I have always loved names. I am pretty picky, right down to naming pets. My name is Amy which I love because it's not super common but it's not "weird" either. My mom read the name in a book when she was a teenager and loved it.I was almost Amy Rae but my dad talked her into Amy Lee. Which I am happy about. I am of Swedish heritage and love Swedish and Scandanavian names. I also love the tradition of mothers using their maiden names for their first daugher's middle name. For example my Aunt's name is Jann Bergstrom Ball as her mother's maiden name was Bergstrom.
I do not have any children but I think about names a lot. Most recently Archer for a boy. You may recognize it as the last name of Sterling Archer from the TV show. You may not. If you do, I don't care to hear about your opinion of the show. What I do care to hear is your opinions on nicknames. Most of my family is not into nicknames. My cousin Rebecca is NEVER Becky, for example. Unfortunately my uncle, her father, and his side of their family is really into nicknames. She has a baby, Abram James, who he is already calling AJ. No one is happy about this. I love the name Archer but I have a sinking feeling my uncle, and others, would end up calling him Archie. I do not like this. I suppose my question is, do you feel this would be common? As in teachers, coaches and classmates calling someone named Archer Archie? Or do you think the days of men called Archie are kind of bygone and I'm overthinking?

Date: 2011-11-09 01:41 am (UTC)On the other hand, my name is Mary Grace, and people have called me M.G. all my life, including my parents, siblings, relatives, teachers, and friends. It's not all I've ever gone by, like how some people are only A.J., D.J., B.J., K.C., etc., but I like it.
Like someone said above, if you say from the outset that you don't want people calling him Archie and only address him as Archer, then he will correct people when he's older if they try to call him "Archie" and he doesn't like. If, later on, he decided he does like it, then it's probably out of your hands (like when he's a teenager).

Date: 2011-11-09 05:07 am (UTC)If your kid is named Alice-Yvette, and you want the people to call her "Alice Yvette" not just Alice, or Yvette, then I think it starts at home.
If parents start calling their kids one name or the other, kids don't get used to calling themselves by both names and they will probably introduce themselves with whatever name they are familiar with.
For example, I have a cousin whose name is Jose-Felipe and that's what everyone calls him.
I know someone else whose name is Enrique, but nobody calls him that, to the point that I think he might even forget that's his actual name.
So I think that if you like Archer, you're just gonna have to fight for people to call him that until they get used to it.

Date: 2011-11-09 03:31 pm (UTC)Anyway as far as Archie/Archer goes. I think if I knew someone named Archer my first inclination when I felt comfortable with them would be to call them Arch. But not Archie. If you don't want someone to call you something though just tell them what you'd like to be called or in your case, what you want your son to be called. Eventually they'll get it.

Date: 2011-11-09 03:41 pm (UTC)Same with Anthony. I have a friend named Anthony who everyone calls Anth, not Tony.
Come to think of it that may be the reason I don't like the name Archie for a boy, because it's my friend's dog's name. Haha.
Thanks for your input.
