yet another spotlight-er

Hi everyone! I was also lured in by the spotlight, love names and naming histories and although my partner and I don't have any kids yet (and don't plan to for a good few years), we have already agreed on names:

Girl name: Isobel Marie
Boy name: Elliot Andrew William Penn

I got Isobel because I've always loved the name, particularly with the Scottish spelling (i have Scottish roots and spent my childhood there), Marie after my mum and grandmother who are both variations of Mary. For agreeing to Isobel, my partner gets to name any son we might have Elliot after the kid in ET (no joke), and the Andrew William Penn is for my dad, those are all generational names on his side (poor kid is going to be lumbered with a huge name as we also plan on double-barrelling our surnames!) I have a very unique last name and there are no boys who have carried on the 'traditions' in my dad's family as they've all ended up with daughters, so I feel a duty to carry them on - luckily my partners family have no naming traditions so I have a free hand!



My name: Samantha Elizabeth (middle name after my mum's aunt)
Partners name: Nicholas John (both chosen precisely because noone in their families already had them!)

Maternal Great-Grands: Oscar and Yeotle Leah (I would have been Leah if my mum had known this was her grandmothers middle name when I was born, she wanted to honour her but didn't want to lumber me with Yeotle, thanks mum)

Maternal Grands: Robert Dunham and Mary Lee

Mum: Mari Bennett (she changed the spelling of her name from MarY to MarI in high school, too many Mary's in her year!)

Uncle: Robert Allan (my grandparents weren't very inventive when it came to naming)

Paternal Grands: Andrew & Esme

Dad: Andrew William Penn

Uncle: Robert Ian

Aunts: Esme Sheenagh (always known by Sheenagh), and Mary (yep there are a lot of Mary's and Robert's on both sides of my family!)

Brothers: William Patrick Penn
Andrew Miles (always known as Miles)
Patrick Charles (yep my dad recycled a name for his sons, which I think is weird... they are only half-brothers though)

Cousins: Jessica (Jecca), Thomas, Paula (Pook), Catherine and Philippa

2nd cousins: Billy, Luca, Savannah, Naomi (Mimi), Thomas, Emma, William (Will) & Eleanor (Ellie)

Because of the strong traditions of Robert's on both sides of my family, if I have more than one son I will give them the middle name Robert, but I think it's more important to carry on the Penn name from my Grandmother's side as it traces all the way back to William Penn of Pennsylvania :-)

Ha! That's so weird - mind you, my godparents' daughter is also a Samantha, and she's married to a Nicholas, so I guess we're just a good pairing! ;-)

If you weren't thinking of double barreling your names a common victorian US tradition was to give a son the mother's maiden name as a middle name.

My brother would have been:
Ryan McCormick.

And I plan on passing along my last name to one of my sons.

That's a good idea - I guess it depends if my brother ever has a boy, as my other male relatives with my surname haven't had any, so I'd like to make sure my surname gets passed on as a surname if my (hypothetical) kid turns out to be the 'last man standing' so to speak.
