I just wanted to know what y'all think of the name Daisy Mae. It's presently my first choice for a girl's name. A few of my friends have expressed disdain.

whats so wrong about it? there are many many many female names that were originally boys names, or are typically masculine names elsewhere in the world.

why is it so different from ashley and lindsey?

And I'm sure that when those originated they were a pain in the butt too.

I just feel bad that a girl is always going to be assumed to be a boy when someone sees the name written down.

why is that a bad thing?

It's just a headache/constant frustration IMO

Kinda like pronouncing something in a way that it would never normally be pronounced and then your kid having to constantly explain how to say his/her name.

i think you're basing that on false gender stereotypes though. it's like saying that you should never dress your little boy in pink because, OMG! headache! someone might call him a girl. why does it matter? it's not like i'm naming her anna and pronouncing it "roger."

Breaking gender stereotypes is fine by me. I just wish people (and I'm not saying you in particular) wouldn't use their children as ways to do that. *shrug* Just let them live their lives and decide for themselves if they want to try and break down those stereotypes as well.

it's not the name that's a gender stereotype, though. it's insinuating that a female child with a masculine name will somehow be at a disadvantage. it reinforces the idea that women are somehow inferior to their male counterparts.

I only meant that it would be a hassle, not a disadvantage. Same as if a male was named Olivia for example.

why is that a hassle? because on occasion someone might call and ask to speak with "mrs. olivia so-and-so?" i've had more inconvenient things happen in my life and i have a feminine name. i just don't think it's worth saying you shouldnt name a child something over. it's like saying you shouldn't name your child "noah" if you don't expect him to go out and build a huge ark and fill it with animals. know what i mean?

I think we should just agree to disagree on this issue. It's obvious neither of us is going to change our opinion. I do see where you are coming from though, I just don't happen to agree.

I never really thought about this before, but yesterday I got to think about it. Somebody named Ryan had made an appointment with me, and she turned out to be female. Just something about the way she introduced herself as Ryan made me feel that she is probably used to being greeted with surprise. She handled it well, but I'm just glad that I don't have to keep meeting surprised glances when people find out I'm actually female.
