[identity profile] qtshorty1625.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My mom's watching Income Property and there's a guy on it named Carmen. It was mentioned that he's Italian.

It was the first time I had ever heard Carmen as a male name. Is this popular in Italy/Italian families?

I work at a school in an Italian area and 90% of the kids are Italian.
We've had both a male and female Carmen.

No, Carmen is a female name, Carmine is a male name (I'm italian in Italy).
I think the closeness in pronunciation is what gave way to the promiscuous use.

I've known three male Carmens (one I'm related to, one is a guy I went to school with, and the third is his dad). Pretty sure they're all Italian...

I was watching that episode last night. I thought they said the guy was Portuguese and his fiancee was Italian. Perhaps its common as a male name in Portugal? It's certainly not the first time I've seen it on a guy.

Where I work, we have a homeowner named Carmen. He is in his mid-60s.
