the catcher in the rye is a great book. i don't like the name findley much- i agree with the person who said it's quite awkward-sounding.

I don't like Findley (or Finley for that matter). Holden isn't a bad name, but the literary connection is just too strong. You couldn't name a child Holden without EVERYONE thinking about the character in the book.

I like Finley, but not Findley. Holden is one of those names like Atticus - I wish I could like them, but it seems like so many kids get named that because their parents read two books in high school and are trying to sound intellectual :P

I think Fin(n) is a really cute nickname for Finnagan(sp?) or Findley. I just adore Finn.

I prefer Finley to Findley. Findley sounds like a mispronunciation/misspelling of Finley, IMO.

We had a Finley in high school and I didn't like that either. Finnegan (or however you want to spell it) is better I think. Especially if you want the NN Finn

I completely agree. And that's what I always think of when I hear about kids named that.
They're both characters in books you read in high school, so unless you're popping out a kid between gym and chemistry, save the names for your "like but would never use" bank, because it makes me think that you haven't read a book since then.

I mean, why don't I just name my kids Hamelt and Gatsby and get it over with?

I'm definitely going to name a kid Ham-Melt. And maybe Gravy, instead of Gatsby. That way people will know I spent time in my high school cafeteria, too! :D

Seriously, though. Holden, Atticus, Scout, Gatsby... I wish other high school lit characters got named after, since these are so popular. Why not Hamlet, huh? Or Archer or Huckleberry or Tituba??

Holden is okay, but not in relation to Catcher in the Rye! Also reminds me of cars.

I really don't like either. Holden is tolerable, but it sounds very pretentious. Findley is ugly, I hate Finley, Finnegan, etc.

I love Holden for a boy; very origional and American however Findley is a name i don't like; but this spelling is not common.
