[identity profile] fellclutch.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My mother is a new college professor and she was very excited to show me her class roster. Where all of the names are painfully normal except Stepfanie whose parents were apparently very indecisive.

I was quick to point out to my mother that a "p" is only silent when paired with an "h". What an unfortunate spelling.

Not exactly true. What about as in Michele Pfeiffer? ;)

But yeah, I want to read it as Step-fanie.

The P in Pfeiffer isn't silent! It's just not a sound that works all that well in English, so we're just lazy and only make the F part of the sound.

I actually had an RA in college that spelled it that way, her parents were from Haiti, perhaps it's an ethnic thing?

As a Stephanie, I always take particular offense when people mangle the spelling of my name. I don't even like it with an F at all, unless we're talking Steffi Graf.
