[identity profile] requiem-morrow.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
I went back a week and didn't see it posted, but today I read a follow up article about a couple who are refusing to identify the gender of their newest child...gonna let the kid pic without them putting labels on it. While I will keep my opinions to my self about their decision, I thought the names of their kids were...interesting -

Jazz (5)
Kio (2)
Storm (4mo)

The first two are boys. Storm, we don't know.

I can appreciated Jazz...personally wouldn't use it as anything other than a nick name. I also appreciate they didn't expand it (I know a Jazzton).

Kio...I don't even know. I think of a Kia (car) and a town in a mmorpg I play that we call Keo.

Storm...I like nature names...but all I can think of is the XMan...

Everything about this story screams that they're trying to so hard to be different.

Unschooling isn't just " avoiding traditional schooling" it's a whole different way of approaching learning

Kio is a pretty awesome name.

I'm not sure how I feel about Jazz, at all. Storm is ehh. I knew a couple Stormys growing up, but never just a "Storm".

I hope somebody posts this article to [livejournal.com profile] sf_drama because everyone went crazy in the comments.

I don't like any of them but I saw a Jazzy (f) today who was in first grade... interesting.

Storm and any variation (like Stormy) reminds me of a pornstar name.

wait. so their born a boy (the older two anyways) and they give them a neutral name and let them decide what gender they want to be?

whats wrong with having a boy and naming him George and supporting him if he is gay. he can't exactly choose to be a girl, well not til he is old enough for surgeries... weird.

For what it's worth, I read the articles and I didn't see anything at all about, "letting them choose their gender." They just don't want preconceive notion of what a boy or a girl should be like affect their kids. Like if the little boys want to braid their hair and wear dresses, they are allowed to, etc.

but isn't there a clear difference between letting a kid decide what to wear and how to play etc and actually refusing to reveal the kid's gender though?
I'm all for letting kids having a say in what to wear and things to do and not forcing them into a gender-specific stereotype, but this is a little strange even for me hahaha.

Fun fact though: In Norway, if you name your kid Storm, you have to have a gender specific middle name. My sister's friend had a son and named him Storm Alexander because they weren't allowed to just name him Storm.

this makes more sense, it's still weird, but alright.

Yes he can. There are plenty of people who were born one gender and have chosen to live as the other gender without getting gender-reassignment surgery. A person can choose to be whatever gender they feel most comfortable with. They don't need surgery to validate it.

gay/=/a gender choice

The older two were born boys, raised as boys.

I'm really tired and for a moment I thought these were names of kittens.

That made a lot more sense though. : /

That's it. I'm retconning the entire article in my mind to be about kittens. :)

Jazz, hm...when I first read it, all I could think of was it as a nn for Jasmine, but when I said it outloud, I could definitely see where it could have a masculine feel. Kyo is a male Japanese name, I think. (Don't quote me on that!) But then, I say Kio ever so slightly differently and it reminds me more of Cleo. Of course, I get that they were probably trying for names that weren't gender specific.

As for Storm, if the baby is a girl, all I can think of is X-Men. If the baby is a boy, I actually kind of like it in a guilty pleasure sort of way.

My son's name is Jasper and we call him Jaz, which I love as a nickname. Don't think I'd ever use it as a given name though.
