Oscar-winner Marion Cotillard, and her partner, actor/director Guillaume Canet, have announced the birth of their first son, Marcel.

I adore Marion Cotillard, so I basically think she can do no wrong, but I was reading comments elsewhere from French people who say that Marcel is an old man's name, lol.

WDYT?

I didn't even know she was pregnant!

Marcel seems nice to me.

This was my first thought. My second thought was the scene where Ross walks in with Marcel on his shoulder and Chandler says, "look, that monkey has a Ross on its ass"

I think of the mime lol

Eh, I'm not French. Can't say its a name I'd ever consider, but old man names don't bother me lol

I'm French, it's my dad's name, and I can tell you it's very old fashioned, and not trendy here.

That and the sound and rhythm of the first and family name together is not that great.

I think it's a fine name. And "old man" names were once young boy names, y'know?

Maybe "old people" names are coming back into vogue in France just like in the US?

They're back in vogue, but it's more Jules, Louis or Augustin, not Marcel.

And yes, I also love Marion Cotillard.

Well, to be fair, Marcel does sound better in French. (But what doesn't?) And I agree, even then it is still an old man name. No release of a middle name?

I love Marion Cotillard!

I like the name Marcel, but I've known a Marcell and Marselle. Both boys under the age of 3 currently.

Not my favourite name ever, but I don't hate it.

I don't think it's an "old man's name", but, even if it was, it's not like this kid isn't going to become an old man someday, anyway.

The thing I find the absolute strangest about the name that she chose, was that the movie she won an Oscar for, Le Vie en rose, her character, Edith Piaff's husband's (or boyfriend or son or something....lol) name was Marcel. And there is this scene where the character Marcel dies, and she is screaming out his name over and over again through the hallways of her house.
It seems weird that after a scene like that she wants to name her baby after it... ??

Oh, it's been so long since I've seen that movie, but I do recall that scene. That's kinda strange, when you mention it. It'd be like Jim Carrey naming his kid Clementine or something.

Marcel is not at all an unusual name though, so she probably doesn't associate it with that storyline =).

It's the storyline she won an Oscar for though! lol
And it was a scene that was shown over and over.
It seems pretty strange to me...

Marcel Marceau is what I think of. It's a nice name though.

LOVE Marcel, ever since I had an extremely attractive TA with the name.

I like the name Marcel a lot, but I'm not French and don't associate it with an "old man's name." Although, I always like to remind people that little babies eventually grow into old people, so I don't understand that reason for disliking a name.

I also really like Marcel the Shell with Shoes On (http://youtu.be/VF9-sEbqDvU), so I like the name Marcel. :)

It was in fashion in France around 1920 so yes, it sounds very weird for a baby now. But what makes me dislike it is rather the word "marcel" that means a kind of tank top I find terribly unclassy.
