My fiance and I found out we're having a boy. We (well, I) have had the first name picked out for years. We just need a middle name! We decided recently to name him after my dad. However, my dads name is Harry and I'm not fond of it, and my dad has always said to never name a kid that because he doesn't care for it either. He comes from a long line of Harry's and didn't want to continue the trend with any of his sons.

So, we were thinking...

Harrison or Harrington

Which do you like better as a name in general? Or do you have any other suggestions? I'm not worried about either flowing well with his first and last name.

I really love the name Harrison. I don't care for Harrington. It sounds very pretentious.

I like Henry best as the formal version of Harry.
Of the 2 names you listed, I prefer Harrison. Harrington sounds kind of made up or forced to me and reminds me of fish (herring).

Harold is another option. It's a little bit of a stretch, but I could also buy off on Hayden as being a formal for Harry.

I have a cousin named Harrington (8) and he's quite the charming young man so I'm partial to it.

I love Harrison. Harrington reminds me of the Hotel Harrington in Washington DC.

I like Harrison better. Alternatively, Harry is usually a nickname for Henry. Is that a possibility?

I love Harrison.

This is obscure, but I am a graphic designer so it's relevant for me: Harrington is a font I avoid like the plague because it's a little curly.

I don't suppose you could use your dad's middle name if he has one? Just that it seems a little strange to me use a Harry name to honour your dad if he's specifically said how much he hates it. But it's a lovely sentiment and I'm sure anything you choose will be great. Personally I do like Harrison.

Congratulations btw - I'm due in September too :)

along the same thoughts, try a variant of the name or a name that means the same thing. we wanted to honor my mother with our first daughter's middle name and were going to use her actual name (Miriam) but she HATES it, so we went with a variant instead. everyone was pleased.

Harrison! Such a beautiful name. Handsome and strong.

Harrington reminds me of "red herring" and the Dutch word "haring," which is a type of fish =/

I'm with the Harry to Henry camp, partly coz I'm English and an historian so Harry = Henry to me anyway :) Personally I find Harrison weird as a first name because his name is then just son of Harry, but that's just me :P

Some variants of Henry as a tangent for you:
Enric/Enrico/Enrique
Hank
Harris
Heikki/Heiko
Hein/Heiner/Heinrich
Heinz (!?)
Hender/Henderson
Hendrik
Hendry/Henk
Henning (Henny)
Henri
Henrik/Henrikas
Henrikki
Henrique
Henryk
Herkus
Hynek
Parry/Perry (from Ap Harry/Ap Henry so same meaning as Harrison)
Quique
Rico

To me, Harrington is a surname (it happens to be mine) and Harrison is a nice strong alternative to Harry (and Harold). So I would go with Harrison if I was choosing between the two, but I am sad to see my surname has so many negative connotations ;)

First of all...I LOVE Harry as a name...but I know that's not what you're looking for ;) I'll agree with the others who suggested Henry, LOVE it! I also LOVE Harrison! Henrik was at the top of our list when I was pregnant (but she probably wouldn't have appreciated being a female Henrik!)

Harold and Harrington are definitely not my favorite...

Good luck!

My top pick would be Henry. :)
Harrison and Harrington are pretty equal to me. Both very surname-y but nice enough.

Other ideas: Harris, Harvey, Hilary, Hartley, Hartigan, Hart, Harp, Harrell, Harley, Hank, Huck, Henley, Hal, Hariot, Heinrich, Harlan, Harlow, Harper, Hans, Hansel, Harvard, Heron

Or, is there anything that's really special to your dad that might be good inspiration/a way to honor him? Like, if he was an avid birdwatcher, something like Bird, Finch, Falcon, etc would be a nice way to honor him, or if he has a favorite author whose name you could use? Or what if you just picked a bunch of names you like and let him pick his favorite?
