[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/-----citylight/ posting in [community profile] babynames
Hi =]
Baby daddy and I have our names picked out, complete with back-ups, and I wanted to share.

For a boy;
August Deary (likely with the nn Gus)
Atticus Jem

For a girl;
Veda Plum
Dorothy Bird (with nn Dottie)

(not 100% sold on Plum. I love it, but also think Veda Plum sounds like"ate a plum")

Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

I like Atticus and love Veda (like Vada from My Girl!). I'm not a fan of any of the others.

I was pronouncing Veda like Vee-dah, but I actually like the Vayda pronunciation better. Anyway. Atticus Jem is absolutely awesome, and I also like Veda Plum. Yes, it does sound a bit like "ate a plum" but I guess you just have to emphasize the "V" sound. Also, she won't have to say her middle name all the time, and Veda is such an awesome first name!

Not a fan of the middle name Deary (although it's better than dreary, which is what I first read it as), but the rest are good.

The only reason I don't like Veda Plum is because it seems so short, especially compared to the other choices. I like your style :)

I sort of like these! They're nms at all, but I like the way they sound and they all have so much character. What is the sory behind deary? I call everyone and their grandma "dearie" so I am curious.

And are you pronouncing Veda Vay-da, like in My Girl?

I love the name August. I don't really like the rest, though, sorry.
Jem makes me think of Jem and the Holograms, so I don't think it works well for a boy.

Love August.

I think Plum is really cute, but I don't think it goes too well with Veda.

It is weird, I love the name Atticus and I like the name Jem, but together it is just like holy crap, why not name the child mockingbird and get it over with? Which is doubly weird, because I love when parents name their children after their favorite books! That combo just doesn't sit well with me for some reason.

I like August, and I like both Veda and Dorothy. Be forewarned though, my husband and I were considering Dorothy and Dorothea for a while, and every single person we told immediately brought up some serial killer in CA who buried people in her back yard. It kind of freaked me out. But maybe that is just a west coast thing?

i never heard of the serial killer Dorothy myself. Dorothy was pretty popular in the States back in the 1920's or so, so i don't know why a whole bunch of ppl would automatically think of a serial killer. I mean, the name Jeffrey doesn't automaticall remind me of Jeffrey Dahmer.
and i think Gem (as opposed to Jem) might seem more for a girl, but i guess it depends on your viewpoint.

I named my son August with the intention of calling him "Gus" and I never do! I call him August or Augie (which is a nickname I swore I'd never use, lol!) Everyone else calls him Gus since it's how we introduced him.

Your girl names are awesome!

I've always had a soft spot for middle names with the feel that Plum and Bird have. While I'm not a fan of Dorothy, I do love Veda.

August and Atticus make great contenders for the boys, though I slightly prefer Atticus over August.

I love Atticus. If i ever have a baby boy, i would consider naming him that. :)
(and the "To Kill a Mockingbird" connection is actually a good thing imho b/c Atticus Finch is such a decent guy.)

I love your names. :) Especially August Deary and Dorothy Bird. Gus and Dottie are absolutely darling. :)

I love Plum, but Veda might sound better with something longer:

Veda Petunia
Veda Lavender
Veda Primrose/Posy
Veda Whimsy
Veda Lemon
Veda Ginger
Veda Clementine
Veda Nimbus
Veda Lilac
Veda Soleil
Veda Starling
Veda Prudence
Veda Beatrix
Veda Easter
Veda Melody
Veda Clover
Veda Peridot
Veda Bergamot
Veda Poet
Veda Paisley
Veda Perenelle

I like August but I'm not sure about Deary. It might just be that I've never seen it as a name before.

Atticus is one of my absolute favourites. I read in another comment you've never read To Kill A Mockingbird, so I guess the immediate connection to it probably doesn't happen for you. When I saw 'Atticus Jem' my mind went to the book straight away and I wasn't sold on having two names from it in the one name. HOWEVER, they do sound nice together and, really, if you love it then that's all that matters. :)

Love Veda Plum. Plum is one of my favourite names for a middle (oh to convince my partner...). I also really like Dorothy Bird - it's pretty, adorable, and will transition well into adulthood. Do you happen to read the Bluebird Vintage blog (http://bleubirdvintage.typepad.com/)? I only ask because the author has two daughters, Mila Plum and Gemma Bird. :)
