my niece is Charli and and my sister and BIL call her Charli Bear
strangely enough she has a friend from work who has a son named Charlie Bear- they actually named him that and refer to him as Bear also

I automatically think Bear Grylls and he is really hot and fun and all, but I still think his name is silly.
It's not as bad if it's a nickname, I'm just not fond of the sound (it makes me tongue-tied a little).
It would be awkward for a girl, to me, just because "big, hairy and feroucious beast" doesn't compute well with my idea of feminine (my animal of choice in that case would be Bunny)

I call my son Bear as a nickname. His name is Jack so it has nothing to do with his name, just because he has always been as cuddly as a teddy bear.

It's a cute nickname. I call my daughter Monkey as one of her many nicknames.
I don't think children's nicknames HAVE to have anything to do with their actual names.

I think any nickname that the recipient is okay with is fine.

It's an okay nickname, but one that could potentially be offensive if the person didn't want to be called that.

Heh, my husband's name is Ted (well, short for Edward, which is his middle name), went by Teddy as a little boy and one of my nicknames for him is Honey Bear, and the whole time we've been TTC I've thought of him as 'Papa Bear', which makes me Mama Bear and hopefully soon-to-be baby Baby Bear. :) It just occurred to me last night that Bear could be a nickname itself.

OMG... that's an interesting perspective I can't believe didn't occur to me. I've lived in the Bay Area for 18 years.

I think it'd be more of a pet nickname if I chose to use it.
