'Bear' as a nickname-- cute? dog's name? just plain terrible?

I hope it's not horrible because that's my sons nickname.

Plus, Bear Grylls is the best.

Depends on who it's a nickname for, but I see nothing wrong with it.

I automatically think Bear Grylls and he is really hot and fun and all, but I still think his name is silly.
It's not as bad if it's a nickname, I'm just not fond of the sound (it makes me tongue-tied a little).
It would be awkward for a girl, to me, just because "big, hairy and feroucious beast" doesn't compute well with my idea of feminine (my animal of choice in that case would be Bunny)

I call my son Bear as a nickname. His name is Jack so it has nothing to do with his name, just because he has always been as cuddly as a teddy bear.

It's a cute nickname. I call my daughter Monkey as one of her many nicknames.
I don't think children's nicknames HAVE to have anything to do with their actual names.

Jamie Oliver's son's actual real name is Buddy Bear.

understand i grew up in the shadows of san francisco, but it means something in the queer community that led to some uncomfortable moments for a cousin who went by that name.

It reminds me of hairy gay men.

I have the same reaction, and I am not even involved in the local queer community.

I think any nickname that the recipient is okay with is fine.

It's an okay nickname, but one that could potentially be offensive if the person didn't want to be called that.

*shrugs* In spite of the meaning in the gay community, I love it.
