[identity profile] myiris.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] babynames
My wife has an intern right now at her office who is 5 months pregnant with her first child, a son. When asked what name she has chosen she tells my wife - Kegel [though, it may not be spelled like that, she was very clear on how it's pronounced apparently: KAY-gul]. That's right - like the vaginal exercises....

OMFG, right!?

It's truly amazing what people consider naming their kids.. names like that have to make you wonder if they love their kids..

LMFAO... I am overly blunt so I would have blurted out "like the vaginal exercises??"

Exactly.. and I'm sure if someone mentions it she'll be like "Oh really? Well no one else thought that." Everyone else was just too polite to point it out perhaps..

I'd say something. I wouldn't be able to help it.

I would try to be tactful. I would say, "I can see why you might like the sound of that name, but did you know that Kegel is the last name of a well known doctor who developed some exercise for the pelvic area? The exercises are named for him. They're called "Kegels."

Hahaha! My last name is polish, and even though it isn't spelled or pronounced anything close to kegel, everyone seems to say it that way! It drives me up the wall to be in a waiting room full of people and hear "Mrs....um....um...Kegel?"
Everyone starts tittering. ;)

Oh wow!

In Dutch a "kegel" is a bowling pin. Also pretty ridiculous, though not as bad as the English meaning! ;)

I laughed for like 20 minutes when I read this. Then, I got really sad for that little boy.

Well it's a good thing I always though that was pronounced kee-gull. I knew a girl in high school who's last name was Kagel, prn. kay-gul. I wonder if she knew about kegels...
