I posted this the other day, posing the question of what my new nephew might be called, and offering an invisible puppy as a prize to the person who managed to guess the name.
Well... nobody wins the puppy. I'm surprised, because it's not as though they came up with an out-of-this-world bizarro name, either. I would have though that someone would have guessed it, given that it's reasonably common.
Anyway, baby nephew has officially been named...
Benjamin
I don't hate it, but I don't love it either. Hubby surmised that in this case at least, because it took two days to name the baby, that it was 'a name that you choose when you really can't think of anything else.' Certainly in this case, I tend to agree. Oh well, it could have been a lot worse (not that they would have called him anything kre8tiv or out there anyway).
Thanks for playing my little time-wasting game!

Date: 2011-03-26 04:32 am (UTC)I have a BIL (from new marriage) who is 6 and his name is Benjamin and I don't know... he's a problematic child and I HATE the nn Benny for some reason. But Benjamin is pretty nice.

Date: 2011-03-26 05:02 am (UTC)No doubt he'll get Ben or Benny from the rellos, and that's another gripe. I've never EVER heard his parents refer to big bro as Ollie or Ol, but extended family do... and I'm of the opinion that it's only okay to shorten somebody's name if a) they do it, or b) in the case of a child, their parents do it.
I guess I just feel like Benjamin is one of those names like John or James or Thomas - nice enough names, and if you really love them, good ones to choose, but also the sort of names that people fall back on when they can't make up their minds. Dunno, it certainly seems the case in this situation...

Date: 2011-03-26 02:15 pm (UTC)My aunt and uncle took days to name both of their children and it wasn't because they couldn't think of anything, it was because they liked so many names they couldn't decide which ones they wanted to use!
My kids are Benjamin Thomas and Calvin Robert. Fairly boring names, but we like they the are strong and solid. It doesn't hurt they they're Presidents' names, either! ;) The middle names are after great-grandfathers, so they would have had those middle names no matter what the first names were.
