Today I met a family of three little girl's. Ruby, Garnet & Jade.

At the moment I'm collecting lists of names that relate to a certian theme, and I'm interesteed to hear everyone's opinions on theamed sib-sets. Like them? Hate them? Are they cute or trashy?

Are Paris, London & India too much?
How about Violet and Olive?
Or Billie, Louis and Ella? (Possibly less obvious, but there's still a definate theme.)

Please share your thoughts =]

I don't really like themed names or having all the names start with the same letter.

Jazz singers/artists: Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Ella Fitzgerald.

As for the OP, I'm not a big fan of themed sib-sets. It's too much, especially with place names. BUT in the case of Billie, Louis and Ella I might be persuaded otherwise. Haha. I love all three, which endears me to the names a bit more.

i'm not a fan of themed names or names that sound very similar either. most of the time it just sounds cheesey. however, do what you want for middle names because less people know those. my daughter's middle name is jade and the new baby on the way will have pearl as a middle name. they both have meanings though (jade because she was born in march, the "green" month and my sister's name is megan which means pearl.) and i thought it was appropriate to keep with the gemstone theme because i'm crystal and we have a dog named amber (and my sister's dogs are gem and rocky...!)

I don't love them or hate them in general- it depends on the names. I like the Ruby/Garnet/Jade but really dislike Paris/London/India.

I don't mind most themes and find it kind of funny when people go all 'GAWD WHY WOULD ANYONE DO THAT!?' with them hee hee. I think that as long as it's different enough names i.e.: not Alexandra, Alexander and Alexa... then go on and theme away!

Although for your example of Paris, London, and India - India stands out to me because it is a country not a city like the other two. If you're going for the match I'd say Paris, London, Brooklyn/Phoenix etc.

I like the more subtle themes, so Billie, Louis and Ella is cute!

I also don't mind color themes, I've found.

Paris, London, and India is a bit much for ME, but I wouldn't think it was TOO too weird. I don't like Garnet as a name, so to me it sounds forced.

I posted about them once, but I grew up with three sisters called Opal, Coral, and Ivy. I think it's nice enough. Not my style at ALL.

As long as it's not EXCEEDINGLY matchy, I think themed sibsets are fine.

I like Billie, Louis, and Ella, and got the theme right away! I think the other examples (gemstones, colors, geographical locations) are a bit too theme-y for my taste.

In general, as a general rule, I dislike themes, but I think there are always exceptions.

I think Ruby, Garnet, & Jade are a little too obvious and cutesy. Same for Paris, London, India.

Violet and Olive I think are fine - both are plants, but it's not like they're very closely related plants. One you think of the flower first and the other the fruit.

It depends on the theme, but I find most of them tacky.

Themes can be cute. I'd consider sticking to a theme for middle names, but probably not first names. Coincidentally, a lot of the names I like are from Greek stories so idk what I'm going to do about that. Would it be weird to name two brothers Hector and Ajax?

I like subtle themes, but twins with names that rhyme make me twitch for some odd reason. I don't know what that's about.

Having met themed twins with 'themes' subtle enough I didn't get it until it was explained to me (Naran and Saran, Mungen and Altai, Zora and Jutro, Kuro and Shiro etc.) I have cases where it's okay with me. But it can be tacky. Oh God, it gets tacky. It's like creative spelling - if subtle, sometimes useful and fun. If overdone, it's like drinking soy sauce.

But I still have a weakness for Zora and Jutro. Because I am a tacky, tacky human being and I can pull the 'it's a family name SHUT UP' card.

I think it's cute, but a little much. Also, the three names, despite being gems, don't seem to 'go' together. My grandmother and her sisters were similarly named-- Opal, Pearl, and something else. I've thought of naming at least one of my daughters a gem name in honor of my grandmother, but am not sure. I like Ruby and Emerald. We also like the name Prism and think that might be a way to give a nod to my father's family without going whole-hog.


All you listed are a bit too much. The city/country names are the worst. The plant names are okay, but I think it'd be cuter if Olive was Olivia. No to the musicians' names... that's just too much.

I read a book when I was a kid where there was a family with only daughters, of which they had many, and since their last name was Lace the parents had named each girl after a different type of lace. Entirely too cutesy an idea of course, but fun.
