Mar. 11th, 2011 02:26 pmMy current favourite name is Elijah Ryan Lucier. Ryan and Lucier aren't optional to change, as our son is going to take my SOs last name, and he wants to name his first born son after himself (he is named after his dad).
So, thoughts? My BFF hate the name Elijah, and she sees it as INCREDIBLY biblical and incredibly offensive to those ppl who are christian or jewish. Over all I love the name, but I am curious as to other thoughts.

My son has a Biblical name (Ezra) and I cannot tell you how many people are surprised to hear that it's Biblical. lol I've had a couple people say, "Oh, so you must really like Better than Ezra, huh?" Well, I do like their music, but that isn't why I named my son Ezra.

Date: 2011-03-11 09:46 pm (UTC)I never understood why using a Biblical name would be considered offensive to anyone who has a Biblical faith. People who hate the Bible and anything related to religion are often offended by Biblical names, but I don't understand how using a Biblical name is not honoring the Biblical character.

Date: 2011-03-12 05:52 pm (UTC)Even if it weren't, I don't think Elijah has ever been the kind of name that is so very connected to its origins that anyone would ever think it odd to use it. It's not like naming your kid Moses if you're not Jewish, or Jesus with the English pronunciation.
I think there are names that fall into that category, but they are not ones that are becoming popular, specifically because of that. For instance, I love the girl's name Hadassah, but I don't think I'd be comfortable using it since we're not Jewish. (My husband is all for it, though, so I'm thinking about it...)
Also, I am no longer discussing names with my BFF because she clearly has NO clue about current naming trends. I told her we were considering Adelaide and she was like "But ew, that's so old-fashioned!" and didn't believe me that that style of name is coming back and that Adelaide is rising through the top 1000 right now. Then I said Noah for a boy and her response was "too biblical," even though it's in the Top 10 and again, Old Testament names are in right now.

Date: 2011-03-12 07:36 pm (UTC)I don't automatically connect Biblical names...unless it's REALLY obvious, like Moses or something.
I really like Elijah (sometimes it's on my list).
