Adoption

I was reading a blog by a woman who is adopting two girls from Ukraine. She and her husband are naming them Reagan and Carrington. I think those names are terrible. I am glad she's rescuing orphans, but I do wish she would give them different names.

Regan (not Reagan) is a guilty pleasure of mine too, but it's a "I would never ever use it" sort of guilty pleasure. Though if the woman is a Republican (and, honestly, even if she's not) Reagan is probably better than Regan. Carrington doesn't really have any redeeming qualities.

... and ew at "rescuing orphans." Just ew.

I'm not a fan of either. I also think that most Ukrainians have perfectly recognizable names that might ought to be retained. But, whatevs.

Seriously, if I found out that my birth name was Anna and my mom changed it to Carrington, I'd be pissed.

The few people I know who've adopted from foreign countries have all said that the agencies have all encouraged strongly that they change the names. It supposedly helps in the transition to a new country, new family, new name, new life.

I will admit that I don't know much about adoption.

I really don't either. I just happened to ask why this family had changed the names of the four children they had adopted when the oldest was 14 and the youngest was around 4. It seemed odd to change their names at that age to me, so I asked and that was the some what vague answer I got. =)

Wow, they changed a 14y/o's name? Seems like they took that advice a little too close to heart.

The kids all wanted "American" names coming from Ethiopia to ND, their birth names would be difficult for a lot of people and they would stand out more. Changing their names helps them adjust and "fit in" with their new life, family and culture.

I actually like them both. I wouldn't use Carrington but I don't hate it by any means.

I don't mind Carrington. She could always go by Carri.

Carrington is better than the spelling of the contestant from So You Think You Can Dance a few seasons back- Kherington.

The second I saw that, I rushed to post it here because I was like "GAAAAAH!"

And I don't really care for either name, but they both seem more masculine than feminine to me.

... Daytime TV strikes again, it seriously sounds like characters from someting like All Days of Our Restless Lives.

Regan is nms but it wouldn't be a problem, but Reagan and Carrington...

LOL Yes, my first thought was, wasn't Carrington a character on Dallas or Dynasty or something??

I could get behind Reagan, because I like the sound of it - I just loathe it because of the president connection.

But Carrington? That's an awful, ugly name.

I had a friend named Reagan (but spelled something closer to Rayegon) when I was in 1st grade. Even though it was in the era of Ronald Reagan, I still liked it. Carrington, however, reminds me of an episode of A Baby Story from 10 years ago, where the couple chose that name for either a girl or a boy. Turned out to be a girl. When I heard the name, I was a little o_O

I know this isn't how the second name is spelled, but for some reason this makes me think Nancy Reagen and Nancy Kerrigan.
