What are some of your favorite place names that you might think of naming a child someday? I have a lot, but so many of them are guilty pleasures, hahah.

I'm not usually a fan of place names...but I have a friend who has 3 kids: Israel (m,4), Bergen (f, 2) and the newest addition Ireland (f, 2 months)

Ireland... but I never could (not even Erin) because of my Spanish family having such a hard time pronouncing it (both of them)!

I've actually liked "Shively" as a name for a while - it's a city that I live close to :) I also like Georgia, Montana, Cimarron, Asia, and Carlyle.

as i was driving home i remembered my favorite place names and had to add them - Houston and Austin. I don't know why they slipped my mind!

And as I explained to my husband why I went right to the computer when I came home (to update my list), he added Carolina :)

I like:

Astoria
Londen
Georgia
Charlotte
Iona
Virginia
Alexandria

Its really easy to find place names, but some wouldn't be considered "place names" by a lot of people.

Well, idk there are a LOT of names that are place names when you think about it. Like there's a Bradley Beach in NJ and several other cities named Bradley. Pretty much every name is the name of a city somewhere.

As far as really well-known place names: Brighton, Charlotte, and Georgia would probably be at the top... but I live in Georgia so I probably won't ever get to use it.

I never thought of that; that's very true.

Haha, well... I look up all the names I like on Wikipedia and use (disambiguation) to see their associations, most of them have cities connected to them in some way.

I'm pretty sure I'll never use any of these, but I like

Florence (but I think it sounds more old-fashioned than like a place name)
Charlotte (near where I'm from so using it would be weird)
Sydney (I don't like the NN Syd)
Georgia (love it but I went to undergrad there and have bad memories)
Savannah (too popular)

Charleston just popped into my head for a boy. I've never thought about that before. I'm not a huge fan of Charles, Charlie or Chuck though so that's probably also a bad idea.

I like Cheyenne, Savannah, Austin, Dallas, Conway, Adelaide (I didn't know this was a place until I read [livejournal.com profile] skittles22088's comment). These are pretty much guilty pleasures and I don't think I'd consider them too much if/when I name a child.

Random fact, there's a singer (well, was, he's retired now I think), named Conway Twitty. It's his stage name and he got it by blindly picking two names from a map (darts or something). At least this is what my dad told me.

I would consider Lovells as a mn for a boy. I would only ever use a place name if it had significance to me. Virginia is our #2 girl's name, but the place is after the name, so it doesn't count.
