I've been having a soft spot for the nickname Chip lately, but the only person I know with the nickname, it's in no relationship with his name. Also, I would never use the name by itself, because not everyone can age that name. So my question is, what do you think would be a good name that Chip could be a nickname for?

So far I'm thinking perhaps Charles and Christopher.

Edit: Due to the amount of comments relating to this, I want to add in something, rather than comment to every person who has mentioned this. I know someone named Chip, and his legal name is Robert. He often talks about "being a chip off the ol' block", and I know he was named after his father. I just was taking it a step further, and began thinking if there was a way to use that nickname in a way other than in that sense. Granted, I don't see myself using that name any which way, simply because my dad knows the guy too, and his reaction would be, "You named your kid after Chip?" (well, and the fact that I'm not going to be pregnant any time soon). It was just the way my mind went.

The only person I've ever heard of being NNd Chip was acually named Martin. They got the NN chip from having chips in their teeth from playing hockey.

There was a kid a few grades below me in school that went by Chip exclusively. I never heard another name associated with him. Then the yearbook staff made a mistake and put in his real name instead of his preferred name. The poor kid's name was Almond.

When I first became pregnant, my hubs and I joked around about what to name our baby. One day I said, "Do you think we could score a year's worth of free meals if we name our baby Chipotle? We could call him Chip!" He said it was worth a try and if we had twins the second one could be Sonic and we could call him Sonny. lol

My uncle by marriage, his nickname is Chip, but his name is Darryl. They call him Chip because he's a Chip-off-the-ol'block.

This exactly...I have a friend that has always gone by Chip, but his name is Alfred! They started it because he was "a chip off the old block."

The only thing I can think of would be to name him after his father and then say you got it from "Chip off the old block" or something.

My DH's uncle goes by the nickname Chip. His real name is George. But he is a JR but they called him Chip (as in Chip off the old block) instead. I don't think nicknames ALWAYS have to be tied in to the full names.

If you want them to be related, go with any C-name you like, and I'd call it close enough.
