I love names and am constantly bugging my fiance about future kids names. We both fell in love with the name Cole for a boy however its a hard name to make a fit with a middle name. I threw out Coleton which he hated.. then I suggested Nicholas which I like and he sorta likes.. today he suggested making cole the middle name and calling him that..

so hes the options....

Nicholas Patrick "cole"
Nicholas Edward "cole"

or...

Philip Cole "cole" - Philip is my fiances name a name ive always loved but crossed off bc well its my future husbands name and I dont like the whole junior thing..

Do you think its silly to name a kid with one name but call him his middle name?
and do the combos sound ok?

I dont think its silly to name a kid a name and then call them by their middle name, but I think its silly to call a kid a name that isnt in their name at all. It's one thing to call someone a nickname like Skip or Shorty, it's another to call them a totally different actual name because you like it. You like Cole, you should use it somehow. I think it would be silly to name him Nicholas Patrick or Nicholas Edward and call him Cole. It almost irritates me.

But if you say Nicholas out loud, it has Cole in it... perhaps not spelled that way, but prn. that way. Therefore I would consider it a valid NN.

I see what you mean. I never say it like that, though.

I say it nick-uh-liss

It's probably because I'm used to more European pronunciations considering most people I've known with the name had parents who spoke English as their second language. I usually end up with more of a 'Nee-co-luss' prn, lol.

i know a guy named david jack who goes by "jack", no one even knows that jack's not his first name. not even people at his school. it's a little odd.

I agree, I love Nicholas, don't likeNick (makes me think of wounds and theft), but think Nicholas would probably be a bit long to go by 100% of the time... Cole is a good alternative

Your idea of "Nicolas" is great, but I don't think it's tough to find a middle name that sounds good with "Cole".

Cole Alexander
Cole Benjamin
Cole Andrew
Cole Jackson
Cole Mitchell
Cole Matthew
and I personally think that "Cole Philip" sounds great, you can use your husbands name (and a name you love) to honour him, but at the same time not pull of a "JR" thing ?

Oh, I know 2 people who go by their middle names... 1, "Richard Eric" because every first born son in their family has the first name "Richard" but always goes by their middle name, and "Corey Brett" because she's a GIRL and "Brett" is a more feminine (in her opinion)...

I go by my middle name, I always have. Thats how my parents wanted it. Sometimes it was confusing in school when the teacher would say *Mary* and people were like *oh, thats your name? wtf?*. But other than that, its fine. I'm so used to it that even signing Mary on legal documents looks weird to me haha.

I agree with the person above who said Cole Philip is a good name. Kids dont always *need* nicknames, unless you're really stuck on giving him one. My name is hard to pronounce *to some people*, but I'd rather stick with that than go by something shorter.

My future nephew is Cole Patrick and I didn't like the name at first but I love it now. I like Nicholas a lot too so it works for me!

Cole _does_ come from Nicholas originally! (As does Colin)

All those are great names. Nicholas Philip 'Cole' sounds pretty good too, and would cover all bases.
Can't see the problem really.

if you do philip cole, i don't think it's weird to call him the mn. i don't think it is at all, but it's quite common to call a child who shares a name with a parent by the middle name.

i like nicholas edward and philip cole. i think i like nicholas edward better.

I love the idea of Cole coming from Nicholas! Cole is a great name, but it always feels a little incomplete to me, so using it as a nickname for Nicholas is great.

Honestly, I do think it's weird when people go by their middle names. Well, unless the person decided they hated their first name and so they chose to go by their middle name. But I don't like it when parents name their child and then decide that they'll go by their middle name. It just doesn't make sense. Name them what you want them to go by.

I love the idea of Nicholas nn Cole. I'm not a huge fan of Cole but I adore Nicholas and I think that Cole would be a cute nn :)

I love Nicholas Edward. I don't know why, because I'm not a huge fan of either name, but I like how it sounds.

Phillip Cole sounds nice, too. I agree on not being big on the junior thing. I kind of like that idea, though, of giving him the same FN, but a different middle name and having him go by that. One of my best friends' family does that. I think it started with her great-grandfather and it gone down through the first born son since, for 5 generations now, they just all go by their middle names. It's a cute little tradition.
