Opinions on a bunch of names
Feb. 14th, 2011 09:16 pm*This is all hypothetical, as I'm nowhere near being pregnant. I just have an avid interest in names and like to daydream ahead. ;)
Do you think Beth could work as a nickname for Tabitha? I really like the name Tabitha, but I can't stand the nn Tabby. Being three syllables long, I feel like there should be something shorter I could use from time to time.
There are a lot of definite boy's names I like, of course, but I also love girly names on boys. I'm thrilled when I hear of a male Kelly, Dana, or Mackenzie. I also like girly nicknames for boy's names. The obvious benefit of using names that lend themselves to girly nns vs. using "girly" names is that a boy could choose what to go by when older. So here are the ones I like (WDYT? I would use the full name and the nn equally):
Callum nn Callie (This is my number one name and I would probably call him Callum, Cal, and Callie)
Connor nn Connie
Eamon nn Eamy (prn. like Amy)
Benjamin nn Jamie
Jeremiah nn Miah (pronounced like Maya/Maia)
Speaking of "girly" names, what do you think of Mackenzie and Paige on boys?
Going the opposite direction, what do you think of Tallulah nn Lou? Or do you prefer Lu? Like Tabitha, I feel the need to have a short form to use sometimes.

Date: 2011-02-15 03:29 am (UTC)I've never heard of Dana or Mackenzie used as guys names. I know Kelly is unisex but I have a female friend named Kelly so to me it's primarily a female name.
I'm not a big fan of girly nns on guys unless the guy wants a girly nn.
Callum - I'd use Cal as a nn
Connor - no nn
Eamon - no nn
Benjamin - I know a few Benjamins and they go by Ben or B.J as nns
Jeremiah - no nn
However I have no problems with the nns you like.
I'm not a big fan of either Mackenzie or Paige on guys. I think Mackenzie would be the better option of the two for a boys name.
I see no difference between Lou and Lu as far as pronunciation goes. I'd use Lou if I was writing it down though.
Some other nns for Tallulah could be
-Tallie
-Lou Lou/Lu Lu
-Lulah
-Luly (prn like Lucy)
I know Lulah and Luly aren't real names/nns but they work when spoken, especially for young children/children whose speech is still developing.
Well, seeing that my comment is now novel-length, I'm going to shut up and hope that this is the sort of thing you were looking for :D

Date: 2011-02-15 05:11 am (UTC)Lou and Lu are said the same. Lou looks better to me, but Lu makes more sense coming from the name, you know? I'd probably use Lou though. Lulah is kind of cute. I really don't care for the other ideas, but I do appreciate the suggestions.
And yes, this is the kind of stuff I was looking for in a response. :)

I'm glad that my comment was the sort of thing you were looking for :D

Date: 2011-02-15 04:40 am (UTC)My ex boyfriend's name is Mackenzie and I think it's such a hot name. Seriously. So hot. He went by Mack, which I also love. He said he got asked if name was his mother's maiden name, and got a lot of comments about "Oh, my granddaughter's name is Mackenzie!" (he worked in a bank at a mall where a lot of seniors spent their time), but I asked and he said he was never teased because of his name.
I also went to HS with a guy named Kelley, it works fine for him.
I love Callum, and Callie/Cal definitely works.
I'm not big on Connor.
Eamon nn Eamy is interesting! I'd go for it.
Benjamin nn Jamie is great, and same with Jeremiah nn Miah.
So, as I said before, I love Mackenzie. I think Paige is handsome as well.
I really don't like Tallulah at all so that and Lou don't appeal to me. I think Lu is fine, I get call that sometimes and it has never bothered me.

Date: 2011-02-15 04:50 am (UTC)I kind of understand your weakness for "girly" names on boys, there's some unisex names I really prefer on boys-- Rowan, Taylor, and Morgan come to mind. I love Jamie for James (never heard of it for Benjamin), Nicky for Nicholas, Sammy for Sam/Samuel (you can blame Supernatural for that one). Callie for Callum (or Calvin) is nice, too.
However, I really don't like giving a boy a name that has *no* masculinity behind it. Let's face it, Mackenzie can't really be called unisex anymore, and Paige? Not even close. At this point you might as well name him Clarissa, and that's just not right. Don't give the kid a gender-identity crisis.
Tallulah (on a girl, I dearly hope) is a very interesting name. I can see why some people consider if stripperific, but it's still a lovely and uncommon name. Lu makes a very cute nickname. (It doesn't need the O.) Tal/Tally is another possibility but I like Lu better.

Date: 2011-02-15 05:02 am (UTC)I still see Mackenzie as a unisex even though it is primarily used for girls, but I know Paige really isn't considered a boy's name anymore (I swear I read it as unisex SOMEWHERE before). It's kind of a guilty pleasure, but I really do love it. Still, there are other more masculine names that I would first. I don't mean to start a long semi-off-topic debate, but would you still be saying "don't give the kid a gender-identity crisis" if I was talking about using Logan or Ryan on a girl? I'm just curious because there seems to be, in general, a double standard there.
I'm definitely talking about a girl for Tallulah! I'm torn between Lou and Lu because Lu is more intuitively derived from the name but it seems so insubstantial. I've heard of Tally for a nn before, but I really, really dislike it. Still, thanks for the suggestion.

I would, actually. I really don't like boy names on a girl at all. There is definitely a double standard, culturally, which makes it somewhat less objectionable to me just because she would face less grief about it from others. But I still don't like it myself.

Date: 2011-02-15 10:55 am (UTC)I like Jamie, but dislike the rest of the nicknames. I just don't like those names in general, though, so... =/
I'm fine with Mackenzie and Paige on boys. In fact, I first heard Mackenzie on boys and was later surprised to find it being used all over the place on girls, lol. ^^;
I'm on the fence about Lou/Lu and hate Tallulah.

my brother in law is Stacy
my father in law is Kelly
our daughter is Ryann (pronounced Ryan)
No one has ever had a problem with it or teased them about their names. Similarly, growing up I didn't know people even teased about names. I didn't even know this existed until I was an adult and people told me they worried about naming their kids.

Date: 2011-02-15 05:12 pm (UTC)I'm with you not having noticed any teasing about names when I was growing up and I was in 2nd grade with a male Ashley. This was during the early 90s when Ashley was quite popular for girls.

I like Mackenzie for a boy better than a girl, but I still dislike the name. I'm not a fan of Paige on either sex.
I like Tallulah nn Lou or Lu. I probably prefer Lu.

I DO like names that are girl names now, but used to be boys names, used on boys. So I like Mackenzie on boys a lot. My other favourites are Morgan and Jordan.
