Early Suggestions?
Feb. 11th, 2011 02:26 pmMy husband and I both have really common names (think Jennifer and James Smith, basically), and when we had our daughter, we named her Carolyn. I just found out I'm pregnant and I would like some suggestions! I have a few... criterion, I guess you could say.
I want to say up front that I actually love a lot of the names I'm ruling out here, so I don't mean to judge anyone who named their children names the fit these! We're looking for:
=> Traditional sorts of names, without unique spellings (no Cathwren, etc.)
=> We're avoiding really common names like Sarah or John
=> Old-fashioned names are great (like Evelyn or Colin)
{=> All three of our names have 3 syllables, so that would probably flow best, but not required}
=> Not looking for... not sure how to phrase this... No very Bible-like names like Levi or Esther
Basically we're looking for a balance of not too common (like Carolyn) but not the kind of name that would get a 'trying too hard' side-eye. There are some really unique names I love to pieces but they just won't work with Smith and three other, older family members with more common, traditional names. My daughter has a cousin named Amelia, and that's another name right along the same line of what we're looking for for the next one. Don't know our baby's sex yet, though!
Some of the ones I've thought up on my own:
Girls:
Julia or Julianne
Abigail
Lily (though a friend named his daughter this, she's 6 and told us we could totally use her name, lol)
Boys:
Martin
Jackson (though this is apparently more common lately?)
Zachary Zackary
David (pretty common, but I LOVE it)

Date: 2011-02-11 07:57 pm (UTC)My husband's middle name is Paul and in both of our families middle names are usually a family name (father, grandfather, someone elses middle, etc.) so unless it doesn't go well, we're using Paul for the middle.

Date: 2011-02-11 08:02 pm (UTC)I got super lucky that the name I wanted since I was a kid for a daughter, Carolyn, was the one my husband agreed on. It was my mother's favorite sister's name; she died when my mom was 21, and I never got to meet her. She went by 'Suzie' though, so while it's a tribute, it doesn't feel like one so that that's what everyone thinks when they see her :)

Date: 2011-02-11 07:56 pm (UTC)Yeah I think the David thing has more to do with knowing so many people with that name that it's 'Bibleness' wore off for me! I have a couple of friends who are all Noahs and Levis and Esthers and Ruths and I just... no, not me at all. Heh.
Thanks for a lot of food for thought!

Date: 2011-02-11 07:58 pm (UTC)Yeah I like Zachary a lot. One of the things I didn't add (because it's a bit too much to fuss over for anyone but me) is that my husband isn't a huge fan of nicknames. So he always says if you pick a name for a nickname, just pick the nickname and name them that instead, which I see what he's saying but don't agree with personally. So I want a name that would sound good on its own AND in a nickname. *pulls out hair* Zach works pretty well for that :D

Date: 2011-02-11 08:10 pm (UTC)LOL! I love the name Michael, but we know TONS of people named Michael. however, none of them know each other. I told hubby that we could make a couple dozen people feel special by simply naming a baby Michael and telling each of them "we named him after yoooooooooou!" :D
ZOMG CUTE BABY IN UR ICON! -points!- awwwwwwwwwwww!!!!!!

Date: 2011-02-11 08:28 pm (UTC)The problem with doing it with Charlotte is that apparently both Charlotte and Carolyn have the root name Carl, so it'd be like naming both kids the same root name. But, seriously, how many people even know that?
My mental processes, let me show you them, lol.

Date: 2011-02-11 09:24 pm (UTC)Abigail and Jackson are both very common these days, at least in Colorado. Depending on how close the friend is, I'm not sure it would be a good idea to give your kids the same name, even if you have her permission. Julia was the 50 most common baby name in the US in 2009, so I don't know if that's too common for you or not. All of your boys names look pretty common to me, to be honest.
Well, for my suggestions, I'm going to define "really common" as anything in the top 100 in the US. I'll put it's 2009 rank in parenthesis next to it and let you decide how you feel about it. A lot of them aren't three syllables, but I thought I'd throw them out there anyway.
